I’m catching up with a mate from out of town, and we decided to play a one shot campaign for a solo adventurer. I’ve got 24 hours to come up with something decent. Yikes!
He’s playing a 12th level rogue, and we decided on a task of being hired to find and bring back some prisoners/kidnapped people.
From what I can tell, a CR 6 monster on its own would be a fairly heavy challenge for a level 12th. Knowing that, are there any interesting monsters under that limit I could theme around?
But ultimately I want to avoid finding the captives and everything going as planned in the escape. What twist could there be? Perhaps they aren’t captives, they were willing? Maybe they have been turned into a vampire(or something more abstract), only to be made known after they are returned to town and begin to terrorise it.
All suggestions are welcome! Roll for inspiration.
what about a mindflayer (CR7) attempting to infiltrate a town, all bar 2 of the captives are either stunned or dead/eaten. The two captives that remain are actually possessed by Intellect Devourers (CR2). These last two were going ot be sent back into town as spies.
Have the Mindflayer "shift" away after taking some damage (I would assume it the rogue would try to stealth in and sneak attack it) and then when the rogue tries to get the last two survivors home they can spring their suprise attack, this could be particularly hard if one of those captives was a spell caster as the Intellect Devourer Body Thief ability says the intellect devourer "It knows everything the creature knew, including spells and languages" So they could start slinging some spells as well.

It looks like a regular person has done the kidnapping, but it is SO not. (It's a shapeshifting Oni, but don't let them in in that. As far as they know, it's just a person.)
Getting into where everyone is held is going great, but as they are just starting to free the captives. The kidnapper enters the room, looking like a person. Suddenly the room/area goes dark (darkness spell), and they hear sounds of it expanding, and the footsteps getting heavier. It starts taunting them, but they don't even know what they're facing. And so forth.
(Oni (CR7, but maybe knock down the difficulty a hair): an ogre that can shapeshift into a regular looking person, cast darkness/sleep/invisibility/gaseous form/cone of cold.)

Based a rough idea I haven't run yet:
