I have a group of friends playing D&D online for a few years now. It's one of the way we stay in contact with eachother between actual IRL meetups. We've been using ROLL20 which has filled its purpose but it's a frustrating software that barely works from time to time.
I GM curse of Strahd at the moment and I'm an avid user of music and sounds to enhance the experience of D&D. Setting the scene is very important for me, so I create my own stuff! I compose music and I design soundscapes and soundeffects. Sometimes they're specific, for curse of strahd as an example, and sometimes they're very much general in the sense of ambience for a forest.
D&D beyond is looking incredibly promising as of this moment and I would absolutely love it if I could upload mp3/wav files to this software or incorporate the use of similar software like fanburst/soundcloud.
Now I might have missed it, and tbh I didn't spend too much time looking, but there might be plans to do this already or it has already been brought up in which case HUZZAH! If it hasn't, do you lot also feel the need for this?
Would be great if they added something for users to share music, art and other resources like this. It is a pity that soundcloud cut out roll20 it was a really good way to share custom music and sounds in game.
I totally use sound and would love this as an option yes!
For me the music needs to be ambient and not distracting, classical music can be too bombastic and overbearing sometimes, certain pieces are perfect. But what I've really found is sound pads from Tabletop audio mixed with ambient music. The sound pads have their own ambient music as well but it can get tiresome after an hour or two. The soundpads "The Dungeon" "Dark Forest" "Old Towne" and "The Tavern" are all pretty great.
To keep the Ambient music fresh I have a paid spotify account. There's an artist called Ambient Realms. They have multiple HUGE volumes of 4 to 12 minute tracks with names like Deep Darkness, Caverns Below, Ghostly crypt etc. I usually find a good 5 to 10 tracks that I take turns putting on loops for a while depending on where the party is.
There're tons of free sound pieces made available thanks to the Internet and royalty free audio tracks. Something like this would definitely add to the experience when getting together IRL with friends to play a campaign. I believe this should be added if at all possible, though not as high a priority as the actual game information already available.
Most of the DM/GM's I know use music and ambient noise as an enhancement to the games they run. Quick access to tracks they use or new music readily available wherever they go would be amazing to have. Having everything on whatever device you decide to use or remember to bring for that session, without having to remember to download or transfer over files between all your devices, is good.

Roll20 now has another streaming service built in called fanburst. It works the same way but doesn't have nearly the same amount of content uploaded. I upload there however and use my own stuff which I then in turn can use in roll20. There are many things I don't like about roll20 but this is one thing I do like, so I hope dndbeyond can learn from them and try something similar!

It's more of a live sampler, but if you have a way to patch your playback through to your audio feed, I love Soundplant. I use it for my live comedy show and I plan on using it with my game. Not only can you set background music, but you can also set certain keys to trigger sound effects like swords clashing, or a spell zap noise, or a monster roaring. I'll probably add a Wilhelm scream too for lolz. It's not free, but not too expensive for a one-time purchase either.
I like all suggestions in this thread, great! I just hope that all these third party programs can be easily integrated to my GM experience when I'm sitting there and crafting all my stuff. Having something on the side, outside of the main program I'm using is a bastard :( I want full control of volume and timing when I play and what I play. Sometimes I even combine different tracks together in layers. This is the stuff I'd love! :)
Thank you so much for posting about them, turns out to be exactly the kind of thing I was looking for last session when I wanted some backing music. However, the album titles are Massive Ambient Music, the artist name is actually Ambient Realms (not that the mix up made it difficult to find them or anything).
When using Roll20 and using their jukebox I search Fanburst for Dungeons & Dragons Video Game soundtracks or OST. Sometimes the results are not as good as a detailed and thorough investigation on what is around, but if I am in a rush its a quick fix for a playlist which needs that tempo and sound I like in a D&D game.

Good catch thanks! and I'm glad you found them. I'll edit the post.
I'll have to keep this thread in mind. My characters love when I set up a playlist for the background, but I always end up forgetting to get it ready before hand!

Spotify has a Curse of Strahd playlist that's pretty good as well!

Sometimes I'll throw in the Stranger Things intro just because I love it so much.
