Played in my first AL game last Monday and am looking forward to playing again this coming Monday. This forum has been super helpful and I've gotten answers to all my questions so far, which is fantastic. So thank you everyone.
I read that characters get 10 downtime days each time they level in Tier 1 and 20 downtime days each time they level in Tier 2+. I also saw that various characters can use those days to craft potions or scribe scrolls and so on. I also read something about "catching up."
I'm running a character that wouldn't really use the downtime, although I guess I could choose proficiency in alchemist's supplies and craft healing potions. But the idea of using downtime to jump a level -- do players do this? The way I read the player's guide I could earn L4 and, if I have 20 days of downtime available, I can just skip straight to L5. It seems like, unless I find something to spend the days on, I should easily have that since the player's guide says I earn 10 days when I level and I'll have leveled 3 times to get to L4.
Am I missing something here? Is it really worth jumping a level? Does it happen often?
imo, don't bother with it unless your group has switched tiers and you can no longer play with them. I've never seen this as an issue though tbh. 'What, you're level 4 and our only open seat is at a Tier 2 table? Poof, you're level 5, sit down". tier 1 tables are the most common (in my limited experience)...so there's no rush to level.
Okay, thanks for that correction on the types of supplies needed. If I have proficiency in the herbalism kit I can spend gold and downtime days to create healing potions then. Thanks.

So, I'm better off taking a proficiency with alchemist's supplies and spending excess gold and downtime days creating healing potions then. Thanks.
It is not worth it unless you missed a session and are following a specific campaign.
You can't craft healing potions with alchemist supplies, you need herbalism kit.
Alchemist supplies can make acid, alchemist fire, oil, ink, soap, and perfume.
Herbalism kits can make healing potions and antitoxins.
