So, I have a problem. And that problem has a name.
The Forgotten Realms.
I am not a fan. I have been this way since 3.0 edition. I have been sick of the setting since then. I personally find it boring, unimagitive and lacking in fun thing to do. This is most likely due to the fact that it has been "Shoved down my throat" for so long that I have run out of things to play in it that I find enjoyable. Now I know a lot of players and DMs like the Realms. I am not one of those. What I need is a break from it. To be able to play AL D&D in another setting, Any other setting. And I do not think I'm the only one who would like to, at least, try out another Campaign Setting through AL. D&D has many Campaign Settings that can be highlighted through OP in the AL. Why have they not been? I'm curious as to the reasons for this choice.
So, I'm trying to find out what can be done about this, both at a Local Level at my FLGS and by those at the top at WotC as well as those in between. I hope this is taken as I intend it, a civil request to those who can help make the D&D OP world a more fun and interesting place for someone who is tired of being disappointed and frustrated by that one aspect of it for so long. All I want is to have fun again, and the Realms are not it for me:(
I mean, I think the big thing about 5e is that it pushed for a more streamlined experience. I believe that making Forgotten Realms the "official" setting helped in that regard because of the amount of campaigns they've been releasing and so as to not confuse players who are getting into D&D for the first time with a giant array of worlds. On top of that, there's no denying that Forgotten Realms is a fantastic representation of mythical fantasy. I don't necessarily agree with WotC's line of reasoning, but it certainly makes a lot of sense from that perspective that as to alienate as few new players as possible, having a central world representing the majority of adventures will help establish storylines and encourage people to continue playing/start building their own.
...That being said, there's been rumors aplenty that they're gearing up to introduce new Campaign settings into 5e. Its certainly evident with the content previews we've been seeing from Tome of Foes that the multiverse is certainly opening up... and personally I'm of the belief that one of the later adventures this year may not be set in the Forgotten Realms.
But ultimately, given that Adventurer's League is a streamlined experience so that you can bring character from table to table without issue, you can't really do a whole lot in terms of customizing the setting (beyond minor tweaks).
Have you played through Curse of Strahd? I'm pretty sure it's the only non-FR setting that you can play in AL currently. I haven't played it, but I hear good things (with the exception of some strange downtime rules concerning leaving Barovia).
I feel some of your frustration. I'm not as burnt out by FR as you seem to be. Still, I'm hoping that Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes is just the introduction of a whole season (or more) of Planescape.
