There is a lot of dislike in the S10 AL rules out there, and I didn't immediately understand the problem. On my intrepretation, characters weren't locked into any season until they hit level 5 and begin tier 2. This just makes logical sense; I mean, why would anyone gatekeep the entry level to their product, right? ...I mean, right? So I made a level 10 character, played through one RotFM adventure, then one Season 10 adventure. I then did some season 5 adventures I found on FG. Did I break the rules? Since that character started on season 10 stuff, he can ONLY do season 10 stuff? Everything else out there is forbidden? This just doesn't make sense to me, and the player's guide doesn't help at all:

To begin play in Plague of Ancients, the D&D Adventurers League season supporting Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, do the following: Create a new 1st-level character for use in this season Play in a seasonal adventure suitable for 1st-level characters, and/or begin playing Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. Each D&D Adventurers League supported adventure you play as a part of this season earns your character rewards and allows them to gain levels. Each adventure has a level range requirement, which your character must meet to participate in that adventure.
So, I created a character, then played some AL, then played a Season 10 AL game. At tier 2, I have to decide if he stays s10 or Legacy/Historic, right? Or did I screw up and have to start over? Did they really make AL this impossible to just pick up and play?
You can create a season 10 character using season 10 rules. They can then play season 10 content. You can also create a historic character using (at least for now) the season 9 rules and play any season 1-9 content (now called historic). Existing and new historic character receive no rewards for playing ANY season 10 content.
"D&D ADVENTURERS LEAGUE CAMPAIGN TERMS
We refer to Plague of Ancients as the current Seasonal Campaign for D&D Adventurers League play in the Forgotten Realms. All seasons that came prior are referred to as the Historic Campaign (and currently include Seasons 1 through 9). Dreams of the Red Wizards is the current Masters Campaign, comprising adventures for higherlevel play."
You can also choose for a season 10 character to play Dreams of the Red Wizards (Master's Campaign) or any historic content. This is called "migrating" and after playing this content they are not eligible to play any more season 10 content - they are now considered to be historic characters.
"Breaking From Seasonal Play. Once your character has reached 5th level (Tier 2) you can migrate them to play in content specific to the Masters Campaign. Additionally, your character can play any of the content from seasons prior to the Seasonal Campaign. If you migrate your character, they may no longer play in the current season’s content."
The way the ALPG is written, I would interpret it that a season 10 character is supposed to play only season 10 content until they reach tier 2, at which point they can decide whether to continue with season 10 or transition to historic content. However, as you point out, it is really easy to start playing season 10 tier 1 content and then just play some non-season 10 tier 1 content. In this case I would tend to think that the character would be treated as a historic campaign character at that point and can not play season 10 after playing non-season 10 content. On the other hand, the case of breaking from seasonal play before reaching tier 2 isn't explicitly covered in the ALPG (and it should be in my opinion).
As David pointed out, we haven’t been given guidance on your situation yet. Yes, you did interpret the rules backwards, which given the sound logic you came at it with makes sense.(Why would they gatekeep the entry level to their product?) But they weren’t writing this like an app or video game with additional purchases available to get more from it than the free version. They just want you to play just enough to need to buy the book and don’t care what you do from there. So everyone starts out only able to play s10 content with their new characters that want to visit ID. But they’re not “unreasonable hostage taking villains.” You can use that character for other stuff after 5th level. You just can’t bring them back. So I don’t know why anyone would. Then you’d have to run a new character through all the t1 content to play any of the t2 and beyond content.
make the least changes to bring your character to legal. In this case you may have to void the season 5 game from your log as you "aren't supposed to be able to play it". It's an honest mistake, treat it as such. No big deal, and no need to delete the character.
