Would appreciate any tips suggestions thoughts... My player encountered a particularly nasty Brigand Captain who surrendered once his band of brigands was wiped out... swearing he was a farmer forced into it all the while sporting a necklace made of fingers... So the players dubbed him the "finger farmer" and ended up letting him go...
Now I felt that's just too good to drop a player named villain the finger farmer...
Well the situation is such that one of the players characters looks very likely to go down Greenest HotDQ Langdedrosa Cyanwrath - and I was thinking I give the finger farmer an appearance once the player is down wanting to show his "gratitude" for being spared by taking the players character finger as a trophy so he never forgets him...
now I'm wondering how do I handle a missing finger? should I just say it heals back with a magic potion... should I give him a -1 dex or sleight of hand till they get his finger back from the finger farmer... who the players would definitely be meeting again.
thanks for any input suggestions exetra

“It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills, It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
take the little finger from the off hand - it shouldn't affect any tests or checks, except perhaps playing musical instruments. Have a healer say that they can reattach it if they get the finger back within a week, or something, to prompt a vengeance quest.
Yeah that sounds good ThorukDuckSlayer thought -1 dex was ridiculous almost immediately after posting... a little vengeance incentive with maybe a bit of time pressure the follow the raiders sounds right... I certainly shouldn't be further punishing the player for volunteering to fight Langdedrosa Cyanwrath

Growing it back would take regeneration, a level 7 spell. At least I'd think that's what it would take.
I'd say give the character no penalty. Just let it be a cool RP thing. and give him a nickname like nine-fingers. I mean, The Bloody Nine was one of the best character in contemporary fantasy. (Joe Abercrombie novels, read them right now if you haven't.)

Clearly some people don't know why the yakuza demand the off hand pinkie finger...
That said, I wouldn't give any penalties, it's a bit too much for something the PC is being forced into. However you can use it as a roleplaying tool, for example, if the player misses an attack, have it be because of a sudden pain in the stump. If they character fails to pick a lock, descrbe how clumsy they are with a missing finger, etc.
:D Yeah I went with no penalties and the players has renamed himself with the ending "Nine-fingers" eventually they managed to catch up the "finger farmer" and hand outs some just deserts... so now the character has his finger back even if it is in a little finger coffin on his person that they fashioned together for it.

Thanks for the reply ItsNotAChest, I'd hate to be accused of necroing poor Thalon Nine Finger's finger but it took me a while find the section you were referring to so I'll link it here dmg dungeon-masters-workshop Injuries Thinking about it I did look at this at the time but the injuries it covers are far more drastic then rather cosmetic by comparison loss of a finger as in the original question, regardless thanks for pointing that section out.

Hi, I am not a chest. I deny with 100% certainty that I am a chest. I can neither confirm nor deny what I am beyond that.
I used to portray Krathian, Q'ilbrith, Jim, Tara, Turin, Nathan, Tench, Finn, Alvin, and other characters in various taverns.
It's also worth considering that any -1 is a -5% to the check/ attack. Those can add up.
I'm firmly in the "they'll learn to work around it fairly quickly camp". It's a good RP thing that doesn't need a mechanical disadvantage for most things. Even a bow is only fired with the first and second fingers (hence flashing those two fingers can be seen as a profane gesture in some parts of England or so the story goes).
Would appreciate any tips suggestions thoughts...

I'd also say no penalty. Also, getting a special ingredient for a potion or salve of regeneration always makes a nice little sidequest.
