Has anyone adapted any of the Candlekeep Mysteries for Theros? If so, which one? How did you change the setting, NPCs, monsters, treasure, etc.? Did you insert the adventure into a pre-written Theros adventure (from DMs Guild or elsewhere)? If so, which one?
Just looking for good ideas for an upcoming Theros campaign. Thanks so much!!
This is an interesting topic for sure, mainly because I love Theros. I didn't think about using the adventures in Candlekeep Mysteries for a Theros setting, but I suppose it would be possible to change the setting around to fit a more Greek epic kind of feeling. One from the top of my head would be Sarah of Yellowcrest Manor, changing her name to something more greek like Penelope or such could work. In the story there is this part.
"Five years ago, Lord Viallis murdered his family, Sarah, and three other servants as part of a ritual to contact an otherworldly entity."
It could be changed to a desperate attempt to make a pact with Erebos? Maybe he was part of a cult and tried to gain the gods favour. Maybe the family normally had a strong connection to Heliod, but as we know the sun gods favour is as easy to get as it is to lose. Desperate to escape the possible retribution made the Lord do what he did. Sarah's ghost would still play a similar role, maybe guided to the heroes by Heliod, or another god who has taken pity on the whole mess. Basically hide a political divine plot behind everything, just to solidify the war between the gods.
Faerl could be a Returned hidden by magic instead of an elf. Sir Vecken could be a hoplit follower of Iroas perhaps.
Many possibilites to use the core element of the story and reflavour it and the characters.
I hope that was some help? Just pulled it out of thin air.
I’ve done a couple as one shots, and woven a couple of others into my on going campaign.I change all the Creatures to be Theros appropriate and drop in Theros items when i can.
candlekeep itself has been replaced by the library in Glossion, which is described in the Theros book as being in the surroundings of Meletis and having a truely impressive library. So that’s a nice fit.
Shemshine is set in the library, so that was a quick win, but I swapped all the races to be Theros friendly
I’ve got Kandlekeep Destruktion on stand by I’d prefer I need another one shot - the Barn Door will be an ancientTower of Purphoros, which no one understands anymore. (Glossion was once destroyed by a terrible fire, and then rebuilt. I think the Tower of Purphoros taking off could well have started that fire)
lore of lure -& book of inner alchemy = somewhere in the Nessian Wood. Canopic being & Alkazaars appendix = nice excuse for a trip to Odunos
Xanthoria = I plan to transfer the Liche to Asphodel and the surrounding swamps (seems a good place for a plague to start)
anything urban - Meletis. (I’m borrowing a lot of Waterdeep for my Meletis)
and if the above don’t fit, then a random island in the siren Sea (perfect home for the Grippli)
