I've got a table of 6-8 players that I DM, one is in the army and has to drop out every now and again, while the other is having a baby so he's rightfully with his baby momma and plays when he has time. ANYWAYS, AGAIN SPOILERS HERE:
They're fighting the Chard-Dragon this weekend AFTER taking on Xardorok's Fortress and killing him, so rightfully the Ten-Towns are mostly just destroyed, but i like the idea of an in-town Dueregar/Dragon battle in the streets/siege thing, kinda like the end of Dragon Age Origins. Question i have though is balance....all of them are level 7 and the dragon is like a CR 8 or 10....can't remember either way if they focus this thing its dead in a round or two maybe 3 and i want this fight to be fun/epic. What are some things i could try or you've seen done that would help me here? I did think about bumping it's HP to the next hundred (i think that would be 300?) and giving it a sort of a phase thing like in an MMO or RPG. Like at 2/3rds and 1/3rd it becomes more unstable and beams just shoot out or something, idk any ideas on how to make this encounter more fun/challenging would be great! I do have some ideas i'm willing to try, but im sort of curious of any ideas people can shoot my way.
You can use a mythic monster (introduced in Mythic Odysseys of Theros; basically when it drops to 0 hp it has a health reset and new powers), or homebrew your own thing. You'll need a pretty large boost to the dragon to make it function as a solo monster against 6-8 PCs at level 7, I would be tempted to just use two of them.
Lol i honestly thought about doing 2, but i only got the 1 gigantic model. They're new players mostly and this is their first campaign so i want this big dragon to live up to their expectations. I DID think about Legendary Actions, but can't think of any ...like fair ones lol. He needs to feel like a good mid game boss while not directly overshadowing Frost-Biatch. Faced her as a player and man shes mean. I plan on adding towers with Ballistae for some fun pew-pew for the melee folks as well as some checks n saving throws for dodging collapsing buildings (thanks avernus) as well as a few other things, but I want this dragon to be idk more for its damned size lol.
