One of my party members has a ring of spell storing. She claims that after a long rest, any spells that were cast from the ring can be restored, and I claim that she needs to cast spells into it again.
Example. She has a 4th level spell and a 1st level spell in the ring, and has prepared 8 other spells of various levels in her wizardly head. During the day, she casts the 4th level spell in the ring, and also her only 4th level spell from her head. After a long rest, she gets back the 4th level spell in her head, but her ring is still minus that 4th level spell. if she wants it in the ring, she needs to cast it into the ring, but then it is removed from her head. As she is 7th level, a short rest won't allow her to get back a 4th level spell, so it would take two long rests to reclaim the spell in her head and in the ring. Now, a 3rd level spell (or below) would be different, as she could reclaim one of those with a short rest, cast it into the ring, then get it later with another rest.
I agree with you. Would the ring be able to regain spells initially found in the ring after a long rest? I would assume her spells would work the same way as those.
You are correct. The ring acts like a battery. Once drained of the spell, it needs to be recharged by casting the spell back into the ring. For this reason, people typically put their emergency spells in the ring and memorize spells they would likely use during the day.

That is normally what I did whenever I could. Try to make sure the ring is topped up and memorize my "in head" spells to full, so I always had the max available, whenever possible.
What I normally do with a Ring of Spell Storing is give it to someone who isn’t a spell caster and put some spells in it for them to use depending on what the party needs them to have. It’s nice for a spell caster to have one, but it’s great for a fighter or a rogue to be able to cast Healing Word for example.
Ring of Spell Storing needs to be recharged by having the spells cast into it again (assuming you want the same spells). It does not automatically recharge.
In addition, keep in mind that the SPACE used in the ring for any specific spell is the spell level of the slot used to cast it and NOT the level of the spell.
A shield spell cast with a 5th level slot will take 5 spaces in the ring and fill it completely with one shield spell.
This feature particularly affects warlocks who do not have lower level slots. A 5th level warlock who only has 3rd level spell slots will only be able to put one spell in the ring since a second one won't fit using a second 3rd level slot.
For my party, it is actually a staff that acts as a ring of spell storing. The party all got magical items at 3rd level and were able to gain some immediate benefits. For the wizard, the staff gave her advantage on INT saving throws and immunity to 0 and1st level illusions. These items were made for them by one of the player's father, but he was killed before completing them, so they had to find the items needed to complete (3 items for each). When they found the first item for the staff at 5th level it acted as a ring of spell storing but only for 3 levels of spells. Also added +1 to her AC.
At 7th level, the 2nd item added 1 more level of spell storing, +1 to AC and allowed her to cast Moonbeam 1/day as if 3 spell slots were used. Now the staff must be attuned. There is one more item for them to get, but they don't know what it is yet.
The fighter got a rapier that also has 3 items, and the rogue got bracers with 3 items.
And I spent a ton of time on Homebrew getting the modifiers right!

Which is why I hated having a Ring of Spell Storing when I was playing a warlock. I could only put one spell in it. I had fellow party members charge it for me.

I multiclassed into one level of sorcerer which came with some useful abilities, cantrips and spells and particularly 2 first level spell slots which were very useful for the Ring of Spell Storing. The character is currently 10 hexblade pact of the blade/ 1 shadow sorcerer.
I mean I used ring of spell storing while being a wizard. Used it to store spells I didn't want prepped for a while. But when everyone has their attuned item fix, kinda hard to pass it around. So I had spells from cleric/paladins put into it. Mostly since it helps to be able to heal besides life transference. Can possibly in town, go to the church or temple. Pay for healing services, but into the ring. Also if you got those friends in town; Nobody suspects a gentle repose, or revivify to be put into there, since helps with the handy "healer" going down issue.
If you really want to stretch and rule of cool it. Contingency may be able to get additional use from the ring. Since ring has it as a spell you can cast. And Contingency asks for a spell you can cast to be used for it. (Maybe rule it that it clouds out gems on the ring that can't just be refilled right after) That way you can expand your options.

Not sure how that would work. Contingency is a 6th level spell and a standard ring of spell storing can only have up to 5th level spells.
I mean to use your own contingency spell to utilize a spell from the ring. Sort of get the ability to cast a spell to use other class spells on yourself. Seems quite the investment to do so given your own 6th level spell slot. As well as an attunement slot to be able to do such a thing.

Question for you all - how does this work?

Only spilt the party if you see something shiny.

You are 100% correct, no where in the item description is mentioned that the ring recharges itself in ANY way.
In fact, it is the exact opposite! The last sentence of the item's description says:
Which is why I hated having a Ring of Spell Storing when I was playing a warlock. I could only put one spell in it. I had fellow party members charge it for me.

I think that some ppl treat the ring as extra spell slots, that come back on long rest.
That would probably up the rarity to very rare, if it grants extra spell slots instead of just being able to store a one-use spell.
How amazing would that be?
