I run a thread in Tips and Tactics called DM's Guide to Monsters, linked in my sig. I'm wondering what are some of your favorite monsters, or maybe some you've had trouble running in the past. let me know, and check out some of the articles out so far. tell me your favorite 5e monsters, from any source book!
My absolute favorite monster in dnd is the blink dog. it sounds like it would teleport but no it says " its ability to blink in and out of existence" meaning the ****er leaves existence and then re enters it at will

Blink dogs are pretty sick. I'll admit I've never used them but they are a fun monster for such a low level.
Some of my favorite monsters are kobolds, because many smart lizards is a good way to kill player.
Of course, official kobold mental stats are rather low, which isn't something I'm terribly fond of (in AD&D they were average (low); 2e refined that as 8-10; 3e, 3.5e, and 4e gave them no penalty).
I am a big fan of using monsters like giant animals. It gives the players a chance not to leap directly into combat, and leaves many ways to handle a hostile enemy. Have a giant crab in a cave? Toss it some food and continue on!

It's a strange split with kobolds. On the one hand, they're fairly dumb, but on the other hand, they can also be spellcasters and excellent trap makers. That's the aspect I enjoy more, the idea of kobold warrens being these trap ridden hives where they lay ambushes. I think it's more interesting when they are resourceful and kind of smart, rather than weak little dragon cowards

on the other hand titans can be super fun in the fact that instead of outright combat the players may need to climb it and take out weak points ike in shadow of the colossus. or climb into it and fight little robots like mech antibodies to kill it as if you were a virus
I'm a big fan of mimics and gelatinous cubes. One of my parties encountered a gelatinous cube at level 2 and the experience shook them so bad that now at level 7 they are still afraid to go anywhere near one.
I've used assassins with two different parties and am really impressed with how dangerous that statblock is when used carefully.
I love the monsters that aren't 'that' dangerous, but can be incredibly deadly in the right situation.
Take the Devourer from Volo's. At CR 13 it could prove a challenge for a party around level 10 on its own. But what happens if you unleash one of these in a town. Instead of aiming its attacks at the players, it should be attempting to knock as many townsfolk unconcious as possible. That's because it heals and gains an extra action when imprisoning then killing a humanoid with 0hp, as well as the damage of its most devastating attack increasing by 10 per humanoid with 0hp within 20ft of it.
Hard to take advantage of the devourer's abilities, since it doesn't damage devoured creatures, it just gives them disadvantage on death saves. Infinite minion creation, such as a Shadow Dragon will likely be more problematic.
gelatinous cubes are fun. Anyone who's played the video game prey knows how fun mimics can be. One of the dirty tricks they pull often in the game is have mimics disguise themselves as medkits so when you try to heal you get attacked. its really fun and I like mimics for jumpscares.
