I'm working more on making my own world map (without the DnD official areas in it). I originally just had a single continent, but as I searched online I found how much people put into full maps and now that I'm putting more in than just the one continent I'm getting all kinds of ideas on adventures that can be had. I am using Photoshop to edit the map together, are there any suggestions on mapmaking?
I am also looking to let the players build their own town somewhere on the map, it sounds fun to build it up from nothing. We have just finished ToD Dragon Hoarde, and in between I was going to toss a bit of stuff to do to get the players excited about making their own town.
to clarify, when you say you will let the players build a town, do you mean in-game, like making a castle during downtime and so forth, or, out-game, like background story making and such?
They will have an area of land and get to build their own town, they can build it to a large city or keep it to just a small town. There will be quests that came from that town that i create.
While in the topic of maps, when/ if you guys make a world map how do you account the DnD official lore into it. Right now we are in the ToD land, from what I understand that is a huge land mass and I didnt leave much space for the DnD lands that will be in books we might get.

look up the cartographer's guild, it has a ton of great mapmaking guides.
