Hey guys, so I've been running a campaign, for almost three weeks now, and we have been using a computer screen, that my husband built a frame for, as a map display and a way to show visuals of what things look like based off of pictures and art I've been hording as my inspiration. We have LOVED using the few live maps available on youtube, and I have also enjoyed creating maps for the core places they are at and displaying them on screen. However, I was wondering if any of you have ideas for more creative uses for the screen besides just maps and visuals? I really love bringing in more tangible things for my players to use and play with, and they have responded extremely positively to what I have brought in so far. Knowing how outrageously creative and smart the D&D community is, especially you DMs, I thought you may have some fun ideas and input.
(Side note, I do have a dry erase map I can use to draw last minute maps too, so I am not limiting myself on options for things I can use to help players visualize. )
Not sure if your screen has speakers or not, but even if it doesn't, you're using a computer to display images on the screen, so you should totally be playing background music! Music really adds another level to the game if you're not using it. I know there are some Spotify and Youtube playlists that are themed around specific areas and scenarios, like Tavern and "On the Road" playlists. I'll dig some up and link them!
Edit: Literally this guys playlists are what I was thinking of! I listen to his playlists while I work, I think my favorite is Atmosphere: The Wild. I listen to it while working, because it's a great playlist for having on in the background!
I actually have music set up from my spotify account via my tablet and separate speakers, so if the computer has any sudden noises it's muted and doesn't distract. I actually do use those playlists a ton, and I have been building my own for a couple months now. :) I get a free premium account through my job, so I can really take advantage of it, and I love the freedom it gives me. I was looking more for input on visual things I can use the screen for. One idea I had was some sort of puzzle or something, but I don't have any ideas how to implement it. Thanks though!
Ohhh a puzzle is a really good idea! Something like a language they have to decipher would be pretty slick! I think there's something like that in the Tomb of Annihilation! I just looked and it's on Page 132. You could also do handouts pretty easily, if you need a last minute documents or things to present your players. Also one think I love about the Adventure Modules in Roll20 is it presents you with images of all the monsters to show the players! You could do that too!
