I'm fairly soon running my first ever campaign to my group. Players would like some background knowledge to help with the character creation, but I'm not sure what I can share so I won't spoil it.
Another question the adventure starts on a ship going to the isles, but there is no mention of the place where the ship departed from, at least not in the introduction. I think it is most likely Waterdeep or Neverwinter, because those are the two big cities on the Sword Coast.
If someone could help, I would appreciate it, thank you.
One trick as a DM is to have the players come up with a rough idea for their backstory, then share it with you and you can reveal information and ideas to help tie it into the campaign.
For example, I was running LMoP+DoIP, and one of my players chose to play a rock gnome. In this adventure, there is a rock-gnome cavern, so I proposed that their character may have originated from said clan. They agreed, and we went from there.
Tell your players the setting’s premise, let your players come up with some basic ideas, then work with each player to tie it into the campaign, revealing information as necessary.
Ok this is great, but... and this might be a dumb question... what is the premise exactly? I guess what I mean is that what the characters know before the beginning
