Hello! This is my first post on the D&D beyond forums. I want to suggest a spell slot alternative called mana. How this would work, is a spell slot equals a mana point of its level, eg. a 1st level spell slot would be 1 mana point, a second level spell slot would be 2 mana, going on to ninth level spell slots being 9 mana points. You could only cast spells (like magic missile) with 9 mana points (in a 9th level spell slot) if you would have 9th level spell slots. You would regain maybe 1d8 plus half your level mana points daily. You would calculate your max mana points by seeing the combined level of all your spell slots. (Cantrips don’t count)(if you have, for instance, only second level spell slots, you would include how many first level spell slots you would have.)

Interesting, however you might need to add weight to the later level slots, 9 Level 1 Magic Missile Spells ≠ 1 Level 9 Meteor Swarm Spell. But I do quite like this as it gives a bit more freedom with how you organise your spell slots and means you can’t just solve all your slot problems with a long rest.

You are almost describing how Psionics worked in 2nd Ed D&D with Psi-points.

Very nice!
The spell point variant is in chapter 9 of the DMG under the create a spell section.
