So a Discord server I'm in has an admin who's new to D&D and wants to learn. And I've been asked to run a game so she can learn. That's all well and good, but I'm in a position I'm not used to: I can't run the game via voice chat. It has to be done all typed out.
Why? Because the member who requested we run a game so she can learn how to play by playing is not comfortable using voice chat. I'm still fairly new to DMing so this isn't exactly something that's ever come up before...so I'm turning to more experienced DMs and asking you: What would you do in my situation to ensure the game ran smoothly and was able to get up and running.
What you are describing is basically a play-by-post game. As long as you understand that these games move a bit slower, things should be fine. You just have to type out your descriptions better and occasionally post pictures in the chat so that your players understand what they are interacting with.
Here is a sample of a PBP I ran here on this forum:
If only one person is not comfortable using voice chat (but is comfortable ot listen) another option is they listen in and type what their character says / does. This is MUCH quicker than pure play by post as only one person is typing (and the DM does most of the chat as well). I've played that quite a few times (though using Roll 20 for the text).

Ah that makes sense.
I shall let them all know. Thanks. It should be easy enough to pull off.
