Hi ya’ll! I’m working on an idea for a campaign where the BBEG is this order called Knights of the Silent Oath; their goal is to destroy the gods and fate so that people can have true freewill over themselves and their lives.
My idea of how this order was founded was that a party of five bonded together because they were all cursed by fate and didn’t want anyone else to suffer like they had only their true goal kinda got lost along the way. Only my brain is having a hard time coming up with curses, or like ways they could have been cursed by fate.
I did have one idea for like a cleric who it was said at their birth would be a great saint and so were raised with this expectation, only no one ever told them that it was also said they would have to die for the good of the world, so they rebelled and ended up joining the party to fight this. (A bit like a self fulfilling prophecy cause now they’re evil and do need to die for the good of the world)
Just wanted to come on here and ask if anyone had any thoughts or ideas on this! Or maybe a good resource that might spark an idea?
I like Bybyroro's paladin idea. (You could have them lose their family instead, in which case you'd be describing the protagonist of approx. 50% of all fantasy, which might be even more fun.)
Someone who was raised from birth to be the hero, which meant they never got to live a normal life.
Someone who, after defeating their enemy, kept being brought back for endless "Sequels" until he couldn't stand it anymore. If you're open to using undead, a revenant might be fun, in which case he wasn't even allowed to rest in death. (Revenants are one of the few undead that can be good-aligned.)
Someone who believed, (correctly or not), that he wasn't allowed to defeat the enemy early on because fate wanted a bigger climax (and the villain wasn't powerful enough, or close enough to completing his goal, at that time.)

Also, suggestions for which monsters might be found together (for people tired of dungeons full of one humanoid race, and perhaps a few beasts and undead.)
Someone that was the legendary hero that could pull the sword from the stone, but they didn’t want to be the hero (kinda cliché until…) they drowned the sword in a lake but it came back and killed them. A redead hexblade warlock.
A warforged that was built to fulfill a purpose that they don’t want to do, ie guarding a gate until the end of time, protecting the heir to a throne ect. They abandoned their post but now they are being chased by their creator, trying to bring them back

I had a character in a Theros campaign, the idea was that everybody would be a character with a "main character" background, so that everyone was a mythic hero.
My character was the archetypical Hero of the Hero's Journey, and his backstory culminated in his challenging the goddess of Fate to a coin flip - if he won, he'd gain the strength of a demi god in order to correct all the injustices of the world, but if he lost, he would lose everything he's ever known.
He lost the coin flip, and his name and his deeds were removed from history: nobody would remember him, statues built in his honor would tarnish until they were unrecognizable, even friends and family would forget him. During the campaign he was an older man brought out of a self-imposed retirement to teach a new generation of mythic heroes.
The campaign was honestly probably the most fun I've had as a player. Everyone really brought their A-game to the characters and the world.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
a mind flayer. hear me out. a mind flayer ARCANIST(quote me if you read it as anarchist). this arcanist rebellled against the elder brain, and now they realize that the gods of fate are controlling them more totally than the elder brain ever did
edit. realized i should probably detail their curse. as a mind flayer they are typecast as some high level minion, and that's all fate has in store for them, no matter how mutch they try to deviate from that, they always return to that role
About Me: Godless monster in human form bent on extending their natural life to unnatural extremes /general of the goose horde /Moderator of Vinstreb School for the Gifted /holder of the evil storyteller badge of no honor /king of madness /The FBI/ The Archmage of I CAST...!

A wild magic sorcerer could be one. No worse curse than the fireball effect on the wild magic table.
jokes aside, there’s a lot you can really do there with that.
Here are some off the top of my head.
Paladin who lost all his friends “to strengthen him for trials ahead”
A person who had a run in with a divination wizard who told them something they didn’t like
A person (somewhat like Caleb widowgast from Crit role) who wanted to try and erase an event from their past they regret but can’t,
I’ll see what else I can think of, but I hope this gets you thinking.
