So we completed Rise of Tiamat. Sadly, my players were not able to stop Tiamat form coming into the world and now they face the ruins of the age of dragons. Has anyone dealt with this situation? I am planning to run a continuation and present the players with a chaos world reigned by Dragons. The challenge will be to put the players on a good story and also make this challenging as players are now level 15 so battles from now on should be epic, but I will think places of the world will still have lower races still ransacking and causing havoc now more than ever all over.
Anyway, any DM out there done this? How was your experience as a DM and how was it for your players? Is it worth the effort?
Could run it as a approaching post apocalyptic terminator-eque setting where dragons and abishai rule over enslaved mortals. Rebel bands of adventurers and the like strike out into blasted wildlands to decapitate the 5 chosen of tiamat before they can finally get all of evilkind to band together and rule the world.
One of Tiamat's spheres of influence is Chaos - and a common trope is that evil consumes itself, tiamat is also the goddess of greed so perhaps the players can exploit the avarice of one of her most trusted generals to gain an advantage and strike back against her.
For inspiration I'd look at things like terminator, the matrix, star wars or Divergent where a small group of rebels is trying to find a way to oppose a larger tyrannical force.
I still have a year or so to go before we even get there. Hopefully my players will fail. Would be cool idea to have the world gradually be over run by Tiamat's forces as well as other dragons. That gradually transform the world into an hellish landscape. Only several pockets of civilization left. Then forward time a few decades where a new group of adventurers runs Scales of War campaign with some adjustments to fix the world from those who failed before.
Lots of lore on ancient dragon vs giant conflicts. Have the player's team up with giants, perhaps from storm kings thunder and work against tiamats forces until... Well who knows
Beside the apocalyptic angle, you could run some planes adventurers. The realms has a host of powerful individuals and wouldn't turn to ash right away. So maybe the players are sent by the lords of waterdeep to try and convince bahmut to join them, while they form a army to slow her down.
They could have to gather up material for a ritual to summon him to the material plane, so he can battle her. All the while her sphere of influence and destruction grows. They will have to escape cities being burned to the ground and her agents trying to stop them.
In the middle of a big dragon take over style campaign, although my dragons aren't about eradicating things so much as subjugating. If the players end up failing to stop their overall plan to turn most races into dragon kin then the whole campaign will shift and it will be time for La Resistance. You need to decide what is Tiamat's goal, how will Tiamat achieve this, and can it even be stopped? Tiamat being Tiamat, one summoned, seems pretty hard to stop.

A dragon rises and brings about a new age of terror, destruction, and ruin?
