I made a campaign, found some players, and sent the recruitment link. But, there's no place for the players to post content.
I've run games in Giant in the Playground and Myth-Weavers before, and in those cases you have to create an In Content thread and and Out of Content thread. Is that what I need to do? If so, why did I need to create the Campaign instead of just creating an IC thread? Am I missing something? Is there a way for the players to post in the campaign? They obviously can roll dice in it, and I can reference their character sheets in it. So is there something I need to do to make it so the players can post in it?
Or after I've created the IC thread, do I even still need to reference the Campaign? I've been looking for help files on the subject, and I don't see one. If anyone has answers, or perhaps a link that discusses the procedure to running a PbP on D&DBeyond, I'd really appreciate it.
Currently the Campaign does not have that functionality. Mostly it just lets the players see some aspects of the other characters in the campaign along with seeing dice rolls. You can add some notes as DM, but overall the vtts have better spaces for that. None of it is really designed for PbP anymore. You could possibly use a vtt like a realtime game does and still take turns, mixing the theatre of the mind with the tactical, but it's going to complicate things. Best of luck in continuing this legacy form of playing!
You could also use a discord server, but that isn't advised if you aren't prepared for people you (I assume) don't know.
Discord and I don't get along. 😅
I need to work on that. On your advice, I've started looking into PbP Discord servers. I don't mind playing with strangers, but I struggle with anxiety. So as long as everything is text-based, I'm ok. 😊 And you're not wrong. Discord has tons of options! They even age-rate the games so you know what kind of games (in terms of ooolala, violence, or language) you should be building. I appreciate that. And it's more mobile friendly than most PbP sites tend to be, so I can play on the go. I suppose the thing about Discord that intimidates me is how vast it is. I get overwhelmed by the massive community, all the different servers, and all the different options. Which is what usually attracts me to more niche sites. D&DB specifically deals with 5E, a system that I love, but have trouble getting into because everyone who knows me on other PbP sites knows I run 3.5 games... something I'm trying to force myself to move away from.
But I'm surprised that D&DB isn't designed for PbP. I've really never seen a better platform for it... at least not for 5E anyway. I suppose that means I can use D&DB tools on forums I'm more familiar with, like Giant in the Playground or Myth-Weavers when I need to, which opens up a lot of options for me as well.
Just use the PBP forum. You can either post in-character and OOC in there, or use a group message on the site for OOC stuff. The forums have a dice roller, but it's been very unreliable lately (read: over a year) so you might want to use the campaign log to track roll results instead, if you don't want to use Discord plus Avrae.
I eventually figured it out. But it still confuses me about why the Campaign option exists. I wish I understood it better, because maybe it has a function I might want.

Just create a thread on the PbP forum and tell your players to go there.

There are a few functions for the campaign page that will be useful.
It gives you, the DM access to all the player character sheets in one place. So you can read, edit, and add things to the character sheets.
If you have a subscription, you can share your D&D Beyond purchased content to the character sheets that are in the campaign.
I everyone is using the digital dice on the character sheets, the campaign keeps a dice log of all the rolls.
The Encounters tool pulls in the character sheets from the campaign and lets you build and run combat encounters using that tool.
If you have a subscription you can use the maps tool which is connected to the campaign page.
Hope this helps.
