As maps get closer to being finished every day, I think it’s time we talk about custom tokens.
Right now, I’m populating my maps with NPCs for an upcoming game, and I keep running into the same issue: “This monster token isn’t in the DM’s content library.” It’s frustrating—sometimes I just need a sample token for something simple, like an elf, but instead, I’m stuck without a quick option.
At the very least, there should be 4-5 free sample images for each playable race. I’ve already purchased books and adventures, knowing I’d need access to certain creatures, but for something as fundamental as basic tokens, they should really be included—especially if we’ve invested in the 2024 rulebooks.
Now, to the main point: there should be a dedicated feature for DMs to create tokens quickly and efficiently. Right now, the process involves creating a character, importing it into the campaign, and then adding the token, which is unnecessarily cumbersome.
Here’s my suggestion: add a custom token option at the top of the token menu. It could allow us to simply drag an image into a file drop location, rename the token, and have it ready to use. This seems very doable and would massively expand the DM’s toolkit, especially when players inevitably take unexpected turns—something that happens all the time.
