I'm attempting a oneshot soon, but whilst writing it I am attempting to add some subsystem or something to give a bit of mechanical freshness (my players have played fifth a long time and some mechanical differences may be interesting).
I've looked at some other systems and even things like curse of strahd and the Tarokka reading.
anyone has some legit ideas that seem interesting?????
In the world I've created; arcane and natural (ranger/druid) magics aren't unlimited resources. Arcane magic is tied to a pool which is depleted every time a spell is cast, and it's a physical, tangible thing. Natural magic is tied to the health and well being of the world, if the world starts to die and wither, so does the magic. There is a system in place, via the natural ecosystem, to balance and restore natural magics over time. In the case of arcane magics, the presence and survival of certain magical creatures is needed to allow the recycling of used magic to find its way back into the pool to be used again.
I like to increase the likelihood of exhaustion as it feels like an underused mechanic (how often does any player ever get to 5 levels of exhaustion?). I have either environmental conditions (e.g. extreme heat) or allow players who have failed a check to reroll but take a point of exhaustion as the result. You can either make this automatic or have (circumstantially) have the player make a willpower check or constitution check to see if they gain exhaustion. With willpower I like the idea of someone digging deep and summing the will to hang on to a ledge or make that long jump, and with constitution it feels like someone pushing their body as far as it goes, such as holding a door closed or swimming in a raging stream.
