I'm looking to see if anyone has ever had a mini boss fight that took a ton out of the party that you've created a way to let the players heal/gain spell slots back before they fought a boss type encounter.
My party is in a dungeon and just had a great combat with a vampire spellcaster and 2 vampire spawns. The main baddie in the area orc-napped a party member into the throne room of the dungeon where the party will encounter them.
The party was basically depleted of spell/ki points and 1 was even making death saving throws. They will have to encounter the next boss but I've been thinking of have a 2 stage encounter.
Stage 1 - boss has some type of summoning spell going on that the party will have to break concentration to force stage 2. During this stage the party will fight off vampire spawn while trying to figure out how to stop the ritual.
Stage 2 would be combat with the boss but only to the point where she fleas to run back to her boss.
If I have that I will give them any combination of a short rest or a long rest or something in between where they get to full hp and 1 slot per level back for casters.
There is no fun in it for the player or the DM if you send them in to an encounter that they are woefully unprepared for basically steering them into a TPK.
The DM assisted us as up popped an unnoticed portal that happened to be near by. Knowing we needed something as we were very depleted. We took a chance and entered the portal....which took us to a room "in town" aka warehouse. Walked out and saw we were safe in town to recuperate. When we were ready, that portal also allowed us to get back into the dungeon which was a couple of weeks travel away. The most positive thing was & I am sure it was inadvertent, we were able to steal big heavy items back to town. Funny thing, the portal happened to be destroyed right as we were going to transport another heavy load of items.
The easiest solution is a magic item (either a consumable or something they can't remove from the location), that gives the effects of a short or long rest in a fraction of the time

Any feedback is appreciated

Decades ago, I was in a similar campaign.
