One of my BBEGs has lots of really long, relatively thin tentacles with rather light crushing damage but fairly good lifting strength. It will be snatching players up with said tentacles, probably wrapped around their waist or legs, and lifting them off the ground for a few rounds while hauling them in to a mouth.
Once they've been snatched up, and maybe upside down, I'm thinking that their roll to hit the tentacle holding them, or the approaching mouth might not be overly affected, but that their melee damage might be reduced. I'm also thinking a save for concentration will be appropriate before allowing spell casting. I'm thinking any ranged attacks would be at least disadvantaged. Finally, I'm thinking that the BBEG would have an advantage to hit the same character with a 2nd tentacle.
I would like to get some opinions on this. Also, eager to hear chatter from anyone who's done this before.
Yeah, actually a homebrew version of a Tangler Tree. 60 ft tall, 27 tentacles, 4 mouths.
The Kraken uses Restrained condition - I would rather them be able to act. Tentacles will not necessarily be covering their arms and upper torso, and are not as large as the kraken's tentacles, being more rope-like.
The Roper is much closer to my Tangler, and it uses Restrained too, which makes sense. Having reviewed Restrained, that condition allows actions, but disadvantage to attack.
I guess that works for me, thanks for the quick responses!
There is also the Tree Blight. Sorry, I do not know how to do the linky thing. I am such a pitiful luddite. I just used this mob on my party in the Evermoors, and it was a hit. To me at least. :evil DM smile:
