Hi guys, I need ideas for impediments and silly spells on a chase scene down a corridor for a light-hearted one-shot
The group is level 1 (5 characters), at a school for adventures. The quarry they have just spotted in the distance is a magic user, and the corridor is known as the Gauntlet (where aspiring adventures lay down challenges for others to bypass in the daytime). I'd like 10 impediments/spells to choose from.
This is my first time DMing so any tips on chase scenes would be appreciated.
Bonus question -
How many battle scenes would you typically weave into a 4 hour one shot? I have two a planned plus an optional mimic.
I just had a lot of fun inserting a corridor into a dungeon, where the door at the far end teleported them back to the entrance, but to the players, it just looked like the door opened onto another identical corridor. Took them quite a long time to realise they were just re-treading the same corridor repeatedly.
Anything that players have to traverse quickly, but is also difficult terrain, can make for some creative solutions and tense play - especially if there's danger. Walls closing in together, but the entire corridor is filled with web. That sort of thing.
Regarding your question about encounters, it really does depend. In the DMG, it suggests the party can handle 6-8 med/hard encounters per adventuring day. I've never found that to be particularly accurate though. My sessions usually last around 3-4 hours, and we'll have about 3-4 encounters in that time. But that's a very narrative heavy campaign, with lots of roleplay, puzzles and in-game social interaction.

I love this endless corridor idea!
Thank you for the corridor ideas and answer! We're pretty roleplay heavy so that gives me a good idea.
From the Player's Handbook: Arcane Lock, Blindness/Deafness, Color Spray, Darkness, Enlarge/Reduce, Grasping Vine, Grease, Gust of Wind, Hallucinatory Terrain, Heat Metal (be careful with that one), Hypnotic Pattern, Mislead, Passwall, Polymorph, Reverse Gravity (don't have the ceiling be too high), Stinking Cloud, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Web
From Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Gust, Mold Earth, Pyrotechnics, Snare, Wall of Sand
Those are mostly non damaging spells. Depending on the chase, area, and where the spells are coming from different ones may be more appropriate. I suggest the following for it to be more light hearted and safe: Color Spray, Enlarge/Reduce, Grease, Gust of Wind, Hallucinatory Terrain, Hypnotic Pattern, Mislead, Stinking Cloud, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, and Web.
