So I had another pose about a magical strong sword. And there were some sentient surrounding comments of course. But I wanted to know if it was okay to give a level 3-4 party a sentient weapon? And hopefully gain some wisdom in creating the personality. Not so much based on it's abilities because I don't have those yet. I'm hoping to find out how to create a personality in a sword that is unique and I dunno... I doesn't HAVE to be evil, but it doesn't have to be good either. I've thought about having a paladin inside the sword but I think I might go for something closer to the sword "modwyr". And just as a heads up. Like Modwyr is from PoE 2 I'm thinking of having the same type of power increasing as you please it. The more you do as it wants the better it becomes. So it could start as a +1 to hit / damage. Does an extra 1d6 fire damage. And then later have an ability where it can make another strike right after you missed a strike or something. So perhaps someone here has some sentient weapon xp I can get some help from ^^. Thanks in advance! ^^
Yeah it can. But I need a good personality and tips on how to create and "be" the weapon. ^^ I want it to be more than just a weapon that yells stupid things at the wielder. ^^
The DMG has some good information on creating sentient weapons. It also has a section for NPC creation. Start by creating it as a character first, weapon second. Give it bonds, flaws, backstory, etc then think of how that transfers to a weapon. Intelligent weapons have INT, WIS, and CHA, but what were it's other stats when it was a person? A high STR in life means it might push for a frontal assault in certain situations instead of sneaking around. As you level it up with the character, it could give a STR bonus because that was a defining feature of it before becoming a weapon. (Or something along those lines depending on it's stats/abilities)

A sentient magic item doesn't have to be powerful. It could just be a +1 shortsword that complains loudly when you hit something with it.

I guess I will. But I was hoping to get something that wasn't from the DMG. But I guess I'll have a look in the DMG for it. Thanks ^^.
