I'm a relatively new DM, and I'm planning on running Tyranny of Dragons for my party. I have some ideas of changes I want to make to the module, listed below:
Have the party come into Greenest at midday so they have some downtime before the attack
The cult focuses on looting Greenest than killing people and destroying the town; therefore, the dragon is merely intended to keep the defenders busy
Remove the mayor and most of the stuff you can do during the attack
Put a ballista on the walls of the keep to use against the dragon
Remove the fight against Langedrosa
Leosin Erlanthar hasn't been captured by the cult, and instead recruits the PCs to help him track the cultists and infiltrate their camp
Enter the cavern where the dragon eggs are during the second chapter
Introduce the PCs to Remallia Haventree and Elia at the Yawning Portal Tavern during Chapter 5
Add a red dragon to Rise of Tiamat
What do you guys think of the changes I've made thus far, and what else do you think I could change? Thanks!
I like those. I've been thinking about running this as well. I've only read the first few chapters and so far I can see a lot of places that need to be altered. I also find this very railroadish! Never been a fan of that style but it seems to suit the adventure.
I'm still on the fence of running this. I've got a lot of material that I would to add in.

I’m brand new to DMing. Tyranny of Dragons is a collection of modules, right? Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Rise of Tiamat and a little mini-side thing in Lost Mines of Phandelver. LMoP just has a very small portion against dragon cultists and a young green dragon. Anyway, is there an actual ToD book?
Raider759: Not bad. The scripted fight scene with the champion got omitted in the play-through I did as a PC, but our group absolutely loved the stuff with the mayor and rescuing Leosin. And the DM in another playthrough added a red dragon where you're likely suggesting; it just didn't make sense not to have one. So, good ideas!
Nayt88: ToD consists only of Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. Lost Mines is a popular module that was released right before the first book in the ToD series, so it formed a natural jumping off point for many campaigns. It's two books; no word yet if they'll compile them into a single volume, but I'd highly doubt Wizards will do that.
Thanks for the feedback. I figured on having Leosin not get captured because (at least in my mind) it made little sense for the cultists to take prisoners if they're focused on loot, but I may have to play that one more by-ear based on my players.
about to run the hodq good advice but I might keep the champion duel and kind of present the missions as multiple different things going on at once as for why the cult takes prisoners human sacrifices to tiamat!
I do think that this campaign is kinda railroaded, and I agree with a lot of your changes, but I really want to play Rise of Tiamat with the stakes the same for the players about the cult without playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen and am not sure how to do that.
I am DMing the Hoard of the Dragon Queen campaign. I just made it so that when they find the three black eggs in the cave complex near greenest, one of them is only painted black and is actually gold. One of my characters wants to raise it. I have already found a way to tie it into the story. Any advice on raising the dragon wyrmling or what to do with the dragon Wyrmling?

I agree, the way it's written it's very much a railroad adventure. I like it, but it does need some changes to make it better.
