So my players are going to be finishing up Saltmarsh soon and I’ve made some home brew adventures tied to a players background. These will end with the players at the head of a new necromantic city. They will also have a large army of undead. I’m trying to make mechanics where the players command an army to fight battles. What I’ve got so far is that the players make persuasion checks to gain allies at the start. Then they have different groups of troops. Each battle will be fought in a different location and depending on the preparations the characters made for each battle, they will get advantage or disadvantage on their checks. I’m making the skill Tactical Thinking, which will be a combo of intelligence for battle plans, wisdom to scout the terrain, and charisma to inspire the troops, however, they are undead. They will eventually attack Saltmarsh itself, and then take control of the area. Given the number and power of troops, I think the characters will have no problem winning. However, if they draw attention to themselves, other outside forces may move in. Finally, one of the characters wants to run for office in Saltmarsh. If he wins, they’ll have insight into the towns plans. Have you ever run anything like this? If so, please help!
My campaign has frequent skirmishes and large scale battles, often with characters at the helm. Its based off of DBA, but with a few extra troop types, magic and a morale system. Id recommend reading the DBA rulebook and running a game of that with some card tokens to get a feel for it. If you like it, feel free to let me know and I can tell you more about my systems?
The biggest problem youll face is gameplay. You want it driven by the players themselves, not by skill checks. You also want it to be cohesive with usual gameplay, and fast paced so as to not be a turn off to your players. Good luck!
