I had an idea for a pet-based, pokemon-inspired campaign, that could be a fun way to show players more of the monster manual. Basically, players still have classes and levels, but they progress very slowly, possibly capping at 5th level.
Every player can pick a low level monster from the MM that belongs to them and does the bulk of the fighting. This is where it gets dicey, but you work out a progression system where, instead of leveling up, you get to choose a new, higher CR monster of the same type as your monster evolves.
I am aware there's a pokemon ttrpg, but I thought of this more of a way to play around with the monsters in D&D, since you can never get all the good monsters you want in a single campaign.
