Completely new DM here to both playing and DMing. About to run my first game (luckily the whole group is new) and was going to do the mines. wondering if i can follow that up directly with dragon of icespire peak, or try to combine the two? run it the other way?
To the New DM - I advise going over the material in both Minesand Icespire, and having the locations that you want to use the most already present (and available) at the start of the game. These can also be used as Origin Sites for Player Backgrounds and Backstories. I like to have a Starting Place for each of the major Races - although I'm still working on both Elves and Halflings.
If you are also planning on getting the Trilogy, once you get the information, place clues about the Locations and Quests into the games. Storm Lord's Wrath; Sleeping Dragon's Wake; and Divine Contention - available here on D&D Beyond.
But, take your time, and by letting the players take the lead as to which Quest Clues to follow up on - I found to enhance the game a lot.
Phandalin is a great place to have for the Party's Base. (My Players claimed and fixed up the Mansion)
Gnomegaurde looks like loads of fun.
Axeholme can make a great Dwarven Base, but I'd wait on the Monster Encounter until after 3rd level.
Mountain Toe Gold Mine can be a different route to go instead of The Phandelver Mine (PCs should be at least 4th level for that)
I'd like to hear more about people's experiences with all of these!

Also any tips much appreciated :)
During Cragmaw Hideout, be generous with EXP. The dungeon is difficult, so they should get a level up halfway through
It can be done.
@HybridSalmon created a flowchart that should help getting levels and encounters matched.
