So I, being the nice person I am, picked up the role of dm for a group of friends who had always wanted to get into dnd. This group is entirely different than the group I ran/run the kobold setting. So everyone had finally got a character concept for me to help them work with, and everything’s good. I then get a request from one of them if they can have a pet that isn’t a familiar. Me, trying to be fun, asked him to name it. Goat. He then posted a picture of a baby goat in the group chat we have. I then had the idea to make the goat magic, but I have no idea how to do that. Help?
What if you make it a Blink Goat... like a Blink Dog. You know, it can teleport short distances, that kind of thing. Might let it TP out of danger so it doesn't get killed and whatnot.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
My general advice for pets is that you tend to forget them and end up in situations like: Wait, how did the goat climb down that ladder, how did they manage to sneak behind the castle guard with a goat, where was the goat when the players disguised themselves to get into the lords masquerade ball.
I would consider any magic power that might help solve these situations :-)
You should also remember that the goat should not give ONE player too much advantage unless everyone is OK with that because you already have powers like find familiar and ranger/beastmaster.

Blink Goat solves a lot of those issues. Especially getting down the ladder. ;)

Agreed :-)
I would even consider to sometimes simply have it blink in or out of existence when "appropriate". Rather make an in-game thing out of it. When some player suddenly recalls the goat and askes: "how exactly did the goat get across that river and how did he manage to escape the wolfpack we rode away from". You can say: "Well, just as you think about Billy, he blinks into existence". You can also use it to have him blink out if you want him to stay safe in combats, or you don't want him to be a "helpful" asset. Could even be an interesting story point: "Where are the goat when he's not with the players"?
It would be really interesting after a few adventures, if they end up having an adventure that takes them to "the place where Billy the Blink Goat goes when he Blinks...."

How about invisibility? Have the PC insist that he has a goat that nobody can see, just hear the odd bleat from how and again. Add planar shifting if you want it to pop in and out of existence to keep the game going when a goat (invisible or not) would stop it.

He has two older brothers. He is afraid of bridges and trolls. He keeps blinking in and out of existence. When he appears he is always chewing on some really fresh good looking grass.
Then at some point, if Billy is in danger, his older brother will appear, and he is a really bad ass goat! And yes, of course they at one point has to find out where Billy goes when he blinks :-)

That’s a really cool idea. I may use that so it will just pop up in random places you would not expect

Tex Avery. Nuff said.

He can take the dash or dodge action, but not the help action.
