So my brother and 4 DM NPCs he brought with cleared out 8 wraiths and 8 zombies, that were attacking Wayside Inn. And upon investigation of the zombie skull found the brand of Myrkul.
One of the NPCs, that was the Evocation Wizard Artificer with him, helped investigate the bodies, and figured out that the zombies were from the cult of Myrkul. He had informed my brother's character that the necromancer was probably near by, otherwise the dead wouldn't be able to move for long.
I'm still new to DMing and I dont have the DMG for any references. Did I do any of that right, and if not, did I set up a good enough mystery for my brother?
If your brother is interested in perusing this mystery, than you did everything right! Even if they are not interested, or decide to do something else, you still did everything right. Players have to make choices all the time between options, and just because they go one way doesn't mean they didn't ALSO want to go another.
If you're asking about the mechanics behind Zombies, you have a LOT of leeway as the DM to create the world. By the rules zombies don't need to have the necromancer that created them nearby to continue to operate. However necromancers need to continue to exert control over any undead they create, so if the necromancer wants to CONTROL them he'd need to be nearby. But as the DM you can use a variety of reasons why the the necromancer stayed around; maybe the type of spell they used required it, maybe they want to see the fruits of their labors, maybe they're not done!
Also remember that your NPCs do not always have to be correct, so if you want to change something you can make the NPC an unreliable source. Maybe this NPC who gave that information is correct about the necromancer sticking around, but is mistaken about WHY they did it. You don't want your NPCs always lying, but it's good for your PCs to know that just because this is a character played by the DM doesn't mean everything they say is true!

Thank you for the input, I really appreciate. I need to clarify a bit, that I forgot to mention. My brother had actually rolled high on his religion check, and actually found out that it was someone was apart of the cult. I had the NPC make a insight to figure out if there was something up. And asked my brother to help the NPC out.
My apologizes for skimming part. I have a lot to learn about being a DM, and thank you for the feedback.
