How do Mindflayer tadpoles work? My players will have an inter action with a mindflayer soon. They may be captured and experimented on. I was curious how long a tadpole takes to consume its host and transform it?
One of my players has been dealing with her mind flayer tadpole for months of game time. I say it’s progressing slowly because she’s so dumb, but really it progresses at the speed of the plot. If you want it to be something that happens over hours, it’s hour. If you want it to be months, it’s months. There’s lots of post hoc explanation you can do for variable rates, like the tadpole being at an earlier or later stage of development at the time of implantation.
I might let a greater restoration or heal do it. Levi is right there’s no official way to do it and RAW it wouldn’t work, but it sure feels close to removing a curse like GR or removing conditions like heal lets you do. Still pretty powerful spells, but a bit easier to come by than a wish.
There is a good argument for anything that cures disease to work, after all it is a parasite not that different from a tapeworm.
It is true that 5e RAW has no mention of what defeats it, but there is also no 5e RAW that specifies that Lesser Restoration does NOT cure it.
Greater Restoration not only cures disseases but also removes Curses. It is 5th level spell that should, in my opinion, solve the issue.... unless the DM wants it not to.
Because RAW is silent on the issue I would say this is entirely up to the DM.
If you do not want this to be an issue, Lesser Restoration can be declared to cure it. If the party is low level and you want it to be a minor issue, you can require Greater Restoration. If you want it to be a Major Issue, than you can require even greater magics.
A 5th level Reincarnation spell (after you kill the victim, ideally before the transformation) True Resurrection, or a Wish spell should definitely work. An argument can be made to you kill someone before the transformation is complete, burn the head, and then use a regular 7th level Ressurection spell, it should also work.
But a DM with a mission, could also make up some bull that would stop all of that, even a Wish, from working.

Check out the baldurs gate iii trailer for an example but warning, it’s kinda graphic. U could also check the lore in Volos if u have it
Ceremorphosis/mind flayer transformation is a tough topic, I'd take inspiration from BG3 cause you play as someone with a tadpole in there head. also check out the wiki

However long your story needs it to take.

Is there a way lore based way that my players could try to remove the tadpoles?

I will take both suggestions into account. My poor players they have no idea what is coming hehe.
