I'm trying to create a oneshot that takes place in a desert setting and am wondering if anyone had any interesting suggestions for tavern NPC's or cool creatures for encounters?
I was playing in a campaign (a long time ago, 3e) that took us through the desert. Our DM did an amazing job of reminding us how hot it was and how after a few days in the desert how physically exhausting it was and having a toll on our bodies. At one point my character had a mirage of an oasis and tried to deviate away from the rest of the party. There was a DUNE-like sandworm encounter that basically was kind of like a skill challenge to get away from it. Water became a valuable resource that we had to trade for when we came across tribes or intelligent creatures. We found ancient tombs buried in a rocky valley, we plundered them and fought off some mummies. We "befriended" a blue dragon that I believe was going to use us to further her own plot. Unfortunately we all died in the desert due to exhaustion and dehydration. It was pretty awesome and none of us felt cheated or wronged.
I've adapted this from an NPC in my current campaign..
A town around an Oasis, a tavern on the shore front (if shore is correct for an oasis?) called "The Sand Bar" houses the town entertainment in the form of a handful of men and women of ill repute, a small fighting pit (that also doubles as a goat pen during the day so is a very aromatic place to fight in) and a few tables where various gambling games can be played.
The Inn is owned and run by a Water Genasi called Kadim Sul who is also the main gmabler in town. In fact Kadim Sul is an alter ego/appearance for a Marid Genie called Cunlussaghamath and the oasis is tied to his presence, should he die, the oasis will dry up almost overnight. Kadim has in his possession a magical deck of cards and if people want to play a high stakes game he will offer to let them draw one or more cards from a "special deck of cards that is capable of granting a great many things or taking everything away", this may or may not be a Deck of Many Things.
His normal Greeting to people is: "Greetings Mustaphal'ik" (pronounced Moo Staff A Lick), This is a greeting in the Aquan language and a translation of this Means "Greetings deceived one" or "Greetings to one to be deceived"
