So, ive startet up playing again after many many years off D&D and startet the lost mines starter set. The group have just finished the first part and im awarding XP etc. before next session. However im a bit unsure on how the XP should be awarded when you look at the adventure description.
It states that the first part on completion should award 275 points, yet a gobling in the bestiary awards 50XP on its own.
Should i add the 50XP per killed goblin to the 275? the 275 alone + the first bit of XP puts them into lvl 2 before the next part. However with about 20 killed goblins + a bugbear + 275 from milestone XP gives them almost enough for lvl 3, and thats not how i read the description of the adventure progression :)
Remember to divide the exp between all the players so in your example for a party of 5 people 1 goblin earns them 10 exp each. That said, generally in pre-written modules you give them the award on it's own, and don't add in the exp from creatures. In the Lost Mine modules it says divide x amongst the party if they defeat / complete etc.
In the 1st part of the module they show you how to do milestone-based XP. Later they show you how to do monster-based XP. You should not do both. Award milestone XP *or* monster XP as it tells you, not both together.
Milestone XP is done differently -- it is not done per monster. It is done by rating the milestone as minor or major, and giving "easy" encounter XP for minor, "hard" for major. # of kills doesn't matter when doing it this way.
LMOP is a tutorial module so they are trying to show you the different ways of handling XP.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Thats why i got confused. i havent read up on the whole thing yet so havent seen the difference in XP. ill just award the miestone for this part then :)
I am running Lost Mines of Phandelver for some new DnD Players, and I am a new Game Master. For Part 4, of the campaign, (Wave Echo Cave) I am confused on how much XP to award for defeating the Black Spider. The Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure book says this: "If Nezznar is captured alive and delivered to Sildar Hallwinter or Townmaster Wester in Phandalin, award the party double his XP value." Does "his" in this sentence mean the total XP each player has earned up to this point? Or is it double the XP for Nezznar? In the stat block for The Black Spider, the XP is listed as 450 XP, so double would be 900 XP.

” His” is referring to The Black Spider, so it would be 900xp divided by the number of players.

Anyone know how to handle this?
