I'm running a game of Princes of the Apocalypse (first time DMing I should add) and have a player that's a Half Elf Rogue/Warlock. The game started out initially as oneshot adventure but segued into the PotA campaign, and thus everyone's characters & backstories are slowly developing along with the game.
The Warlock has made a pact with an Old Hag that took him in when no one else would. The backstory is that he feels obligated to her for this but is torn between the obligation he feels to the hang, but also that what may be asked of him as part of the deal (which is not yet defined and my main reason for posting) won't bring him peace (which is what the character is ultimately searching for).
On a side note the character has a side quest to track down an NPC (and possibly kill) in the game that robbed him and forced him to watch the killing of several innocent bystanders. I figure this is how he found himself needing to be taken in in the first place.
To flesh the consequences of the pact out/interweave it into the story I figure I could do this a few ways. The player is on the level so he'd be keen on whatever I throw at him, but I'm having trouble working out some of the details. My options (as I see it) are:
1. Work out a deal/pact that would make sense in the context of his relationship with the hag, and then slowly reveal it to him as the game progress (via visions, dreams etc)
2. Make the killing of the NPC the deal/pact itself and have her appear to him after the deed is done "thanking him" for his good work - the trouble here is I'm not sure what she would have to gain from this
3. Forget the deal entirely and focus his part of the story on the constant dilemma he feels - though I'm not sure how this would manifest in terms of events/story within the game
#1 sounds like the best option to me. If I understand this correctly you would be feeding him clues about what exactly he has to do to fulfill his pact over time. Since the pact is THE THING for warlocks you should definitely try to extend fulfilling it over several sessions at least.
Possible extra idea: give him choices over time that might introduce him/bring him closer to another patron. Then, once he fulfills his pact, he has the option to stick with the hag or take a new patron (aka, switch subclass).

Hi all
