I am a bit new to being a DM. I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on having a PC being a vampire? I conducted campaign where a couple of players became a bit over-cocky when confronting a vampire. That portion of the campaign ended with one of them being taken captive by the vampire. The next session is the rescue attempt. I was playing with the idea of having the captured PC being turned, but I can't find anything official in D&D Beyond. I can be creative in how I handle a vampire PC and would have the PC attempt to resist or fight back, but I was curious on what other DMs thought as well.
If you aren't adverse to Unearthed Arcana (the playtest material released by Wizards), you could use the Dhampir Lineage. It will be a little bit before DDB makes it available though since it just released.

Do not do this without consulting the player.
It is very bad form to fundamentally change the PC on the player, especially if the player did nothing wrong and they just lost a battle due to bad luck or die rolls or maybe imperfect tactics. OK so they were a little over-cocky. Someone was captured -- that is the consequence.
But do not force a player to RP something they might hate (I for one, detest vampires just in general, probably due to their over-use in modern horror, and would NOT be down for RPing a vamp).
If the player is up for it, then sure, go for it. But you do not do something to fundamentally change how a player is able to RP and view their character without at least having an OOC conversation about it with the player.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Thanks for everyone's input. I should have explained that after the encounter, the player that got captured said how cool of a twist it would be if his character became a vampire. That's what got me thinking about it. I also suggested that it might be cool if his character became kind of a Renfield type of character and that the group would have to rescue him.
In my campaign, the world is on-going. So if a party retires or dies, the next batch of characters interact with a different part of the same world and could eventually face the consequences of the previous adventurers. That said, PCs that become monsters or evil generally turn into NPCs for me to use later. For players with an interest in being a vampire I opted to homebrew a Half-Vampire that was a bit more watered down and still has some pros and cons. You could agree that they become a sort of abomination that is neither fully living, nor undead. Express that they are caught in some "between" and figure out the strength and weaknesses accordingly. Could make for an entire spin-off.

Yeah, I was just noticing the release of the Unearthed Arcana and the "Gothic Lineages"... worth trying out at least...

OK, well in that case you're golden.
