I figure this is about the best place for feedback on this.
I am currently running a 5E game using a spellcasting system based on points instead of spell slots. Points are calculated as follows. Every spell slot shown on the class tables is worth points equal to its slot level (level 4 slot is 4 points, etc). All slot levels are summed, plus the spellcasting attribute modifier, for the total spell points available.
These points do not automatically regenerate after a long rest. I have four methods of regenerating spell points.
1. Solar Cycle. Every time the sun comes up the caster regains 1 point.
2. Daily Study. The caster can spend one uninterrupted hour per day studying or concentrating on his spells/magic to regain spell points equal to his spellcasting modifier (highest for multiple casting classes).
3. Weekly Study. Once per week the caster can spend two uninterrupted hours studying or concentrating on his spells/magic to regain spell points equal to his caster level plus his spellcasting modifier (highest for multiple casting classes).
4. Lunar Cycle. Every full moon the caster regains spell points equal to his caster level. If the caster dies during this period, the Lunar Cycle is reset.
At lower levels, this system allows casters to be more involved in combat scenarios, especially by including the spellcasting modiefier. At higher levels, where point totals can get above 50 or more, the spellcasting modifier points don't make an appreciable difference. Higher level casters are forced to spend more time on their magic, which I feel is better thematically.
This system also makes magic items such as a Pearl of Power much more relevant.

You, you and you- panic. Everyone else- follow me.
Does this mean that once I get access to 9th level spells, I can cast Meteor Swarm like 4-5 times?
Not with the variant rule mentioned from the DMG - it puts a limit of only being able to create 1 spell slot of each level 6th and higher per long rest, so it actually trades the normal spell slot system's getting a 2nd spell slot of 6th and 7th levels for the ability to otherwise improve how many spell slots of a particular level you can manage in a day.

In between here and here (way in the back of the DMG) is a variant rule that looks a lot like what you're talking about.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
