Over the past few months I have delved deep across multiple platforms in regards to the acceptable standards for homebrew content, and to put it simply, its completely unrealistic, and infeasible. As I spoke to multiple local DM's about the requirements that homebrew needs to be acceptable in their games, the most common response was "it has to be in line with the power of the official content". This presents a huge problem right off the bat however; it is common knowledge that a large amount of official feats, subclasses, races, and items are considered underpowered or overpowered by a large number of people, or in some cases completely useless. Some subclasses greatly outperform others, even when compared to another subclass within a single class, some common magic items are far more powerful than very rare magic items, and some feats far outshine others, some races have far more useful or even a greater number of features than another, and many other balance conflicts. So if we know how completely arbitrary/random the balance of official content is, why do DM's expect homebrew to be perfectly balanced?
What really baffles me about some of the DM's I talked to, is that they have no problem using their own homebrew rules or systems for their game but absolutely refuse to let their players use any kind of homebrew. What are your thoughts on this topic? do you agree or disagree with peoples standards for Homebrew? Do you believe the official content is balanced? let me know down below.
