First post on the forums, so I hope I'm in the right place. Did a quick search to see if this has been done, and didn't see anything so if I'm repeating someone else, please let me know.
As a veteran of 3rd edition, I was disappointed to learn there was nothing in place for 5e regarding dual wielding great weapons. I know the general idea is that two-handed weapons are not designed to be single-handed. Unwieldy and such. That being said, in D&D, dragons fly. There's no way something that heavy with wings like that could ever fly.
"But the dragon is magical!" I hear you say. Okay, cool so the classic "A wizard did it" explanation to the unbelievable and unrealistic world of D&D holds true. Then why not say there's something exceptional, something magical about the subclass that let's you go full anime-trope and wield those two, good, big ol' weapons?
I propose "Student of the Blade"
Student of the Blade
Ancient Kata
You've uncovered an ancient combat codex describing a style of combat utilizing two large weapons. By utilizing the ground, shoulders and the weight of the weapons themselves, Students of the Blade wield their weapons in unusual, yet effective ways. You can ignore the restriction on two-handed weapons being unusable single-handledly. This does not apply to reach weapons.
Defensive Final Position
At 7th level, in any round in which you successfully hit with both weapons, gain a +5 to your AC for the next attack against you.
Greater Codex Understanding
At 10th level, you gain the Great Weapon Master fighting style.
Overwhelming Assault
Starting at 15th level, in any round in which you land at least three attacks, your third hit stuns the target and makes a 15-foot radius around you difficult terrain until the start of your next round.
Codex Mastery
At 18th level, you fully understand the ancient combat codex. You gain the following:
* Gain advantage on all successive attacks after the first made on a single target. * You can take a free 5-foot step between attacks without provoking attacks of opportunity.
I don't know if this is all nonsense, but at the very least I hope it spawns something that could work.
