I worked out this system for ship-ship combat was hoping for some feedback before I try and use it in a game. TIA
Have players choose jobs to be trained at if they have never sailed or jobs they may add their proficiency to if they can describe a good reason for being proficient
Captain:
Usually not for players but can be
Can veto the maneuvers of the Quartermaster by using an intelligence check with a dc of my choosing (to outsmart the Quartermaster so to speak)
If NPC take advantage on roll to outsmart player Quartermaster
If PLAYER only give advantage for good description or reason for vetoing the maneuver
Quartermaster:
chooses how to use the boats movement to position cannons
Use a nature or survival check with a dc of my choosing
With success on save half of the ships weapons will be able to attack
With a failed check half the ships weapons will not be able to attack
On critical 20 can fire half the weapons with advantage
Decides who boards enemy vessels and what loot to keep
Helmsman/Sailing Master
Controls the movements commanded by the Quartermaster or Captain
Using athletics check with dc of my choosing to keep hold of the wheel while maneuvering
If successful check half of the ships weapons can attack
If failed check half the ships weapons cannot fire
On a critical 20 can fire half the weapons with advantage
Gunner:
responsible for firing the weapons
Can have multiple gunners firing the different weapons if you have more than 4 players
Given advantage on half weapons with critical 20 rolls by Quartermaster or Helmsman
Carpenter:
responsible for repairing the damage during battle or from the environment
Use an athletics check to push the boards up against the water rushing in the holes
Use a dexterity check to nail and tar the patch in place
Restore HP based on how well the dexterity check was
Cannot make dex check without passing athletics
Make athletics check easy as the job has 2 opportunities to fail
Can have multiple carpenters if more than 4 players
