my original plan was to use Javelins as his range weapon (could be used one handed) and i want to avoid the hand crossbow (and the fact i have never had a character who used a throwing weapon) ... but this would require me to invest in getting the strength modifier up to make it an effective ranged weapon.... So i was thinking about Throwing Knives ... now throwing knives aren't a normal D&D weapon... so i'm debating about re-flavoring the Dagger or the Dart.... both do 1d4 + Dex damage.... however in theory a Dagger is both a melee and ranged weapon... i believe a Dart is simply a ranged weapon. Although you could use a throwing knife as a tool (like a camp knife or maybe to cut rope) it would not be an effective stabbing weapon... so i'm leaning towards dart.... what are peoples thoughts?
Dart and dagger have the same damage, right? Then it's all aesthetic preference. A dagger is typically the more melee-oriented stabby-thingy, the dart is the specialized thrower. Either can be used in either function, it's mechanically just a re-skinning.

the only real difference is that Darts are much cheaper and weigh less then daggers do.... I want to use darts so that there is no miss understanding that i will not dual wield a rapier and a dagger (good concept just not for this build) ... Finally im trying to get he DM to give me a custom Magic Item ... It would be called "The Glove of Cowardliness" ... but it would really be my "B!tch Slapping Glove" it would be a thrown weapon that does 1d4 + strength with a range of 10 feet. On hit it casts the spell "Compelled Duel"(Level 1 Paladin Spell) .... it just fits this build which i am now calling "The Duelist" ... thoughts?
I love the Glove of Cowardic idea. It adds a bit of humor to a game that desperately needs a bit of comical flare every so often.
D&D really needs to appreciate the art of a single sword, whether two-handed or one. A two-handed sword is actually a very graceful weapon and relies as much on finesse as a knife or saber. After all, it's a piece of metal with a sharp edge. Short of metal-on-metal impact, it doesn't take much force to inflict injury. A HEMA bout with Longsword takes roughly the same amount of time as olympic fencing and the blows are exchanged just as fluidly.
In fact, if we are talking homebrew feats/features (sorry, this is breaking away from the OP concept discussion), I would argue for something that gives a +1 (partial shield) AC bonus to those in any sort of "plate" armor with a 2-handed sword. In that style, each strike of the blade serves to attack and set aside incoming blows.

maybe the Feat "Great weapon Master" should be more like "Dual Wielder" which gives a +1 to AC and less like "Sharp Shooter" or perhaps there should be two different feats...
The funny thing is that with this build my strength modifier is -1 ... so the glove of cowardice would do 1d4 - 1 for me lol .... not the hardest hit ...but with the swashbuckler base ... i would be the only rogue who can go 1 on 1 with an enemy lol
So here's a thought: if swashbuckler lets you move without opportunity attacks after a hit, are you able to shift around to an enemy's rear, minor action off-hand attack, and get sneak attack damage? Not sure how that's resolved for any class, really. It's usually assumed that combatants are always facing each other, but what about someone with some evasive footwork built in?

you might not need to ... The swashbuckler's Rakish Audacity ability states
Rakish Audacity: (XGTE)
You also gain an additional way to use your Sneak Attack; you don't need advantage on the attack roll to use your Sneak Attack against a creature if you are within 5 feet of it, no other creature are within 5 feet of you, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll. All other rules for Sneak Attack still apply to you.
Sneak attack is clearly once per turn ... but that makes it sound like the first strike in a 1v1 combat situation is always a sneak attack .... as long as you arnt in a crowd.
