I know this post is old at this point, but I'm playing in my first campaign as a martial character, with more experienced players. At low levels (we are level 4 now), I do almost no damage as a battlemaster fighter compared to the rest of my team (bard, rogue, and ranger), who all hit a whole lot harder. I have sort of accepted being a player shield to them, because even with decent dice rolls on a longsword, I'm not doing more than 10 damage a round. And they are regularly doing that along with a status affect (the ranger hits HARD, the bard likes to give lots of disadvantages, and the rogue also can shapeshift because of class). So as a new player who is figuring out what works best for the rp, and is still fun to play, a fighter is easy to use, but doesn't do cool anything, and even if I'm hitting things well and not getting hit, it's nothing like a hunter's mark onto something 100 ft away, or shapeshifting into a literal creature, or being so mean to something that it is cowed. Like it's easy enough to play, but everyone else does WAY cooler stuff with each new level, and as a new player, that doesn't feel great. My DM has given me some cool magic items, but he gives everyone magic items, so they don't help me feel much better in combat or out of it
TL;DR as a new player, the martial classes feel underwhelming, especially when you are playing with more experienced players who almost all have casting abilities.
