I know this is a really basic Homebrew but I thought I'd share it anyways :')
In the recent weeks, I've been asking friends if they would ever be interested in playing D&D. One of them said that he would and was excited to make a Dragonborn, but was quickly disappointed when he saw that his favourite colour- purple- was not an option on the Draconic Ancestry table. I felt bad for him, and decided to look into if Purple Dragons were even a thing. I managed to find these two pages (x & x), and immediately was fascinated by the fact that it's native/resides in the Underdark. Now I personally am a huge fan of Critical Role (as I'm sure many of you here are) and remembered back to the days of Clarota and that Illithid colony they visited. I thought that maybe since the Illithid have psionic powers that perhaps a Purple/Deep Dragon would too, and found out that I could easily modify the Illithids Mind Blast attack to suit a the Dragonborn!
(TL:DR - FRIEND LIKES PURPLE AND DRAGONBORNS, MADE A NEW SUBRACE BASED ON THE DEEP DRAGONS AND COMBINED THE ILLITHIDS MIND BLAST AND DRAGONBORN BREATH WEAPON TOGETHER TO MAKE APPROPRIATE)
Draconic Ancestry:
Dragon: Purple/Deep
Damage: Type: Psychic
Breath Blast: 15 ft. cone (Int. save)
Thoughts, comments? Constructive criticism and advice is welcome. Hope you've enjoyed though ✌️
I think this idea is actually really cool. At first I thought "Pfft, this is stupid, JUST a purple dragon," but you've actually given it its own identity (or, rather, linked it to existing purple dragons). And honestly, with how cool Out of the Abyss was, I'm surprised they never made this an option for Rage of Demons. It's definitely an option I would offer players that wanted to d othat campaign (or any other, but that one in particular).

It's time for this age of fire to end. We will reap the humanity from our foes and usher in an age of darkness.
Sorry to bump such an old topic, but it was the top search result when I was looking for something like this, and I decided to take a stab at it based upon the discussion here. You can see the first effort here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/subraces/227285-deep-purple-dragonborn
Basically it's a bit of a mash-up between a regular Dragonborn and a Drow with the following changes:
Ability Scores: +1 STR, +1 DEX and +1 INT
Age: Mature quickly but not fully adult until 25, can live as long as 150
Alignment (suggested): Chaotic Neutral
Size: Not as large or heavy as a regular Dragonborn (5'5" to 6', 200 lbs)
Speed: 30 feet with 5 feet burrow
Natural Camouflage: In low light or darkness gain Advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks, and can Hide as a Bonus Action.
Psychic Blast: Basically the same as other Dragonborn breath weapons, but inflicts psychic damage with a WIS save, is INT based and deals damage in a 10 feet sphere at a point within 30 feet. Couldn't figure out how to get DnD Beyond to show the sphere icon for the attack on the character sheet, it only seems to show if I set it to a ranged attack, but that's not what I wanted (it's an auto-hit with WIS save to reduce damage).
Superior Darkvision: 120 feet (same as Drow)
Sunlight Sensitivity: Disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks if self or target in direct sunlight (same as Drow)
Languages: Common, Draconic, Undercommon
I think it provides a fun mix. I probably should have added a caveat that the Natural Camouflage requires your clothing/armour to be suitably dark, though similar features don't seem to bother. I'm also thinking the damage on Psychic Blast might be a little too high, 10 foot sphere is generally better than a 15 foot cone, and psychic damage and WIS saves are usually a pretty safe bet, so it might make sense to drop down to d4's as the die type?

Nightmare Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales a cloud of spores in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 5 (1d10) psychic damage, and it is frightened of the dragon for 1 minute. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage with no additional effects. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
I think I’m gonna use something like this in the campaign I’m working on right now. I was just really surprised that there’s no purple Dragonborn, so I looked them up on Google and this post showed up. Very cool.
Back in the day I created in 2nd ed a 1/2 deep dragon theif that used her breath weapon with a kiss She was fun now to re nake in 5 Ed and was wondering which which book would help re make her
This was very useful in creating my own Purple Dragonborn, though instead of simply giving it psychic damage, i instead gave it free usage of charm person, command, and vicious mockery once per short rest, wanted to go for a more manipulative and mind melding type.

One of my favorite characters from the R.A. Salvator books, Zz'Pzora, was a mutated 2-headed Deep Dragon. Rest in peace, Zz'Pzora. :)
Good homebrew build.

How about making the effect into a sphere. More like a psychic outbreak than "breath weapon"

when I looked up purple dragonborns this is what I found
but I like your version better

Debating on whether I should make a 1/2 deep dragon or play a deep dragonborn. Had a idea for a assassin that uses her breath of weapon with a kiss.
"Hey Samus, it's your old pal Ridley! I'm choosing a rogue/barb multiclass. Hahaha!"
