Hello fellow d&d addicts!!! I just started playing maybe 3 or 4 months ago and i have been having the time of my life with this game ! In our last game we had a bit of difficulty due to a good amount of people not showing up so our party nearly wiped :c . i asked our dm if it would be alright if i could create another character and he said it was fine , so i have been racking my brain trying to figure out what a new player just getting into the game could play with a medium difficulty and be something that i have always wanted to play in a rpg . so i thought to myself i have always wanted to play something that wielded a scythe and was implored or be a representative of death itself , but not in an evil way but more of a death being a natural order of things so maybe he hates anything that would taint or corrupt life like necromancy or any dark twisted way like that . i would really like this character to be balanced as possible and if he turns out over powered its not because of the class but by the way i play him and build him . so lets have fun with this !!! :D
P.s. this is my first thread/post so if this is not in the correct area i apologize i am new to this site also >_<;;
If you're playing in Forgotten Realms, Kelemvor would be the God of Death. He's got a very intricate backstory from the Time of Troubles in Forgotten Realms and he sees his domain very much as you describe the Reaper character you want to play. Death is part of a natural cycle for Kelemvor, and he believes that death should be understood and not feared.
The DMG on page 96 details the Death Domain Cleric - I'd go for that.
I thank you very much for the heads up and i am going through my book right now that i just read that lol . but if you were gonna create a class how would you go about it ? Its a home brew game so i asked if it would be okay if i made a home brew character and or class and he said it would be fine as long as he okayed it first. He is very fair but he is very big on balance and not a class that is over powered. But that god you just put i would really like to use that if i can ... You got me so amped for this
There's the DM's Guild Necromancer - One of the archetypes for the class is: Death's Scythe - allows you to hone your martial prowess to ensure your foes defenses fail while you stand unbroken. At the very least it might give you an idea of the task you're undertaking by creating a new class.
And since your intention is to create your own class, I've moved this back to the Homebrew forum.
If you are looking for the "Natural Deathbringer" you can also look into the Shadow Monk from the Player's Handbook or the Soul Knife Mystic (Unearthed Arcana). Shadow Monk, to use the stereotype, is similar to a ninja. Soul Knife can take certain talents and disciplines such as Blind Spot (Free use every turn, take an action and become invisible to 1 creature until the end of next turn), Aura Vision (Scope out targets in a crowd), Precognition (bonus to initiative), and many other nice little tricks for a death-dealer.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Characters:
Grishkar Darkmoor, Necromancer of Nerull the Despiser Kelvin Rabbitfoot, Diviner, con artist, always hunting for a good sale BrĂĽndir Halfshield, Valor Bard, three-time Sheercleft Drinking Competition Champion, Hometown hero
I think you want to create a Martial Archetype using some combination of Eldritch Knight fighter, Arcane Archer fighter (UA) (revised), Pact of the Blade warlock, Hexblade warlock (UA), Necromancy wizard, Death cleric (DMG), War cleric and/or Grave cleric (UA), in no particular order.
Pact of the Blade, modified to only work with scythes and weapons the DM deems similar, is probably very useful, but the Eldritch Knight's Weapon Bond has almost the same effect.
I'd say:
3rd level: Weapon Bond (or Pact of the Blade) limited to scythes; Magic Arrow switched to scythes; Arcane Shot (Brute Bane Arrow only) switched to scythes.
7th level: Reaper (you almost definitely want chill touch); Inescapable Destruction modified to fit; another use of Arcane Shot.
10th level: Inured to Undeath; another use of Arcane Shot.
15th level: War Magic in reverse (cast your Reaper cantrip as a bonus action when you attack with your scythe); another use of Arcane Shot.
18th level: Avatar of Battle; another use of Arcane Shot.
You definitely want Great Weapon Fighting; unless you can talk your DM into letting you use Dex for your attack and damage rolls, your top stats should probably be Str, Con, and Int, in that order.
I have an elf subrace I think might work well for this character, but it's probably slightly overpowered:
Hunt elves: also known as wild elves, wolf elves and hunting elves, these elves are almost always chaotic going on feral. As a hunt elf, you believe most fervently in dead enemies. Others may call you bloodthirsty, especially your high elf cousins, but you know that the best enemy is a helpless enemy, and the most helpless enemy is a dead enemy.
Cantrip: you know the shillelagh cantrip. You choose your spellcasting ability for it from Int, Wis or Cha.
Elf Weapon Training: you have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.
Fleet of Foot: your base walking speed increases to 35 feet.
Mark of the Hunter: you can cast hunter's mark with this trait a number of times equal to your character level (minimum of 1). You can also spend multiple uses at once to increase the spell's damage by 1d6 per additional use spent. You regain all expended uses at the end of a long rest.
Superior Finesse: you can treat any melee weapon you're proficient with as a finesse weapon.
