Im coming up with events to run in the colosseum for the homebrew campaign I’m doing. One event is a tug of war and I would like feed back on the system I have come up with that makes the most sense to me.
Each Team rolls a d20+str mod for each player participating. You add the rolls together and divide by the number of players (rounded up) for the teams total Str. Which ever team has the higher total wins the tug and pulls the rope 5’ in their direction. The first to pull 15’ of rope in their direction wins. Plus you lose 5’ if the other teams wins the tug. So you have to win 3 consecutive tugs from the center.
Seems good but I would make it Strength (Athletics) checks. People who have trained to be good climbers or wrestlers and similar athletic things will be better at tug of war than those who haven't even if they had the same strength, so the skill check, instead of straight ability check, allows that proficiency to be added.

That makes a lot more sense when put that way. I’m still fairly new to DnD so I’m still learning the mechanics. I will most definitely take that advice to use an athletics check during the rolls instead of straight str.
