Hey all this is my first post but I was wondering how other people balance home brew items in there games ? My dm made what I feel is a really broken weapon for one of the players in my game and it makes combat really un enjoyable.
Nothing can be worse for a campaign than a DM who favors one player over the rest. What about this weapon makes it so overpowered in combat and is sapping the fun from the rest of the team?
He’s a paladin with pole arm master the weapon is a +3 weapon that does 2d10 plus his 1d8 for improved smite per hit before he adds smite it also has an ability like power word kill but if your under 100 hit points no save also can create a darkness that moves with him and he can see through it. One round in combat he put out 170 damage with landing two crits he can out damage nearly anything.

What level is your game at? This sounds even OP for level 20 characters? Have you talked to DM about this? There is definitely some favoritism here.
Oh that makes sense then. Of course the deck. If the deck resulted in the paladin being OP then it would be hard to undo the results especially with the main reason for that being the deck which was used in game with the risk of a bad card.
That's a damn powerful weapon already starting with the "it's a +3 weapon with an extra weapon damage die per hit", and had it stopped there it would've been mostly fine. The darkness aura/active ability(?) probably doesn't mean much to the foes you face at lvl 14+ so it's more like a cool visual effect.
As for Power Word Kill it has no saving throw as a spell either, but even as a "once per day" ability it's extremely powerful to get one of the most reliable level 9 spells in the hands of a non-primary spellcaster.
Edit: All that said, it's a bit more powerful than most Legendary weapons (Blackrazor, Holy Avenger and Sword of Answering are about equal), and weaker than most of the Artifact weapons. So if the GM intended for you to find a legendary weapon, it's all good. Just a shame that it ended up in the hands of the character that already profitted massively from the Deck of Many Things, and it reeks of favoritism.
Yeah, um, that's... a bit overpowered. Not too environmentally friendly either, with all the random dead animals.
I hope you feel good about asking the GM what the actual **** they were thinking, because there's no situation where that item is any fun for anyone (except *maybe* the favored player).

We’re all different levels 17-14 the pally is lvl 17. I haven’t had a chance to yet tho
Are you using XP to level up and because of the paladins OP weapon, he gets more levels, or is it because the DM may have favoritism.
Lol deck of many things was used

Deck was used for the level difference. The weapon was found. If there was a way to post pictures I would screen shot the weapon.
