So a while ago I pulled apart the weapons table in the PHB to look at the underlying maths so that I could create new weapon types with different mechanical properties that would keep the balance and let players build weapon ideas from the ground up. Based on these calculations, you can build most every weapon in the PHB except those that have exhaustively been discussed as being imbalanced to those with similar properties (Whip, handaxe, Trident, Greatclub, and Blowgun). The document can be found here:
Recently, we've adopted this for a Westmarches campaign and I was looking at expanding the list of properties to give more interesting options for new imagined weapons. At the moment I have a small list of new properties, but was wondering if anyone had ideas they had used that weren't weapon type specific (say a knockback ability for hammer type weapons) that worked well. Or indeed would like to see.
my DM gave my paladin a sword that let's you reroll 1's that come up on dice for radiant damage done through the sword (ie. the "Holy Weapon" spell and divine smites). It'd be fairly easy to repurpose that into other weapons and elements
There is an interesting weapon feature in Pathfinder 2e called "Propulsive."" What it does is: "add half your Strength modifier (if positive) to damage rolls with a propulsive ranged weapon. If you have a negative Strength modifier, you add your full Strength modifier instead." As it is this could transfer to 5e. I think this is an interesting mechanic that is used on weapons like "composite bows" or the "sling staff."

Hi All,

How to Homebrew Any Weapon
Recently, we've adopted this for a Westmarches campaign and I was looking at expanding the list of properties to give more interesting options for new imagined weapons. At the moment I have a small list of new properties, but was wondering if anyone had ideas they had used that weren't weapon type specific (say a knockback ability for hammer type weapons) that worked well. Or indeed would like to see.
Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks!
