I made an item that I hope to give to a player in a Drakkenhiem campaign when that module completes it's kickstarter next year. The item is the Cartagrapher's Globe, and I was thinking of having it given at the start of the campaign.
The players will most likely start at level 3, and I'm wondering if this could have a bigger impact than I can forsee. I'm going to be a new DM when I run this module and was hoping for some input from the veterans out there.
Is a +2 to wisdom at the start going to bite me In the rear? Should I be more conservative with increasing score maximums? Are there any game breaking things I'm not privy to in the flavor portion of the item?
Any thoughts and constructive criticism are welcome!
It's a tome of understanding...but instead of 48hrs over X days...it's a single hour for the increase.....the map portion is cool, but unless either you provide all the things, or they take REALLY good notes, recalling all of that specific information, especially if you're confining the campaign to Drakkenheim and it's surrounding areas...just give them a map, or the player will "make" a map in game.
I'd likely put this item as a Legendary, or Very Rare.
Thanks for the input. I had forgotten about the tomes to be honest.
My wording of the map portion of the item could probably use some work. My intention is that this globe was made for them by the academy before the start of their ventures into the city. As such the globe would be a blank slate other than an accurate depiction of the continental land masses in terms of shape, size and elevation. Reason being is that for thie item to be updated it must be attuned to someone who is physically exploring the locations it logs down. Also the attuned person has to find hidden things and find/solve puzzles before any information about those things can be logged
I do want to give it at the start. That being said if it was a +1 to wisdom and expertise in cartographers tools would you be excited to get it as a player? It can always grow with the player as the map gets more and more detailed.
Tha drakkenheim setting explains a lot of that. The academy has the right to take any child with spellcasting ability from their homes to be trained at academy towers. I know at least two of the people that are going to join the campaign want to play spellcaster classes. I've talked with one of them about the setting and he is interested in starting out as a low ranking member of the academy and hopes to work his way up the chain in that organization.
Also the academy is highly invested in extracting a substance called delirium from the ruined city of drakkenheim. Due to the circumstances that led to the city being ruined, a lot of things have changed within its walls so old maps of the city would only be useful in a general sense.
The idea is that everyone in the party has a motivation to go to drakkenheim, and the academy has some resources that make it feasible that a group could go in without dying to the environmental hazards that are far more dangerous in some parts of the city.
An agreement to collect delirium as they travel through the city, and only sell it to their contact in the academy (not the player) would give the party a working relationship with them at the start without them all needing to be members
Giving them the globe with the understanding that they would pass on to their contact the information of how the city has changed in the 15 years that it's been ruined, would be a boon for the academy.
Don't forget to give them delirium potions and watch as they forget the effects it has!
Okay, so if they already have 1 or more connections with the academy, personally, imho, send them out on a mission first from their contact. See if they come back.
I'd have to imagine that an artifact like that would be pretty expensive in materials, and time, to make, so sending it out with a few greenies...well that's not worth the potential cost.
Have it be a reward for them coming back with x shards/crystals.
Same here. It's by far my favorite setting of any streamed games and I hope they meet their goals in a day or two. Dungeon Dudes are definitely giving us enough notice to make it possible.

As an attunement slot? Maybe, but I feel like there'd be better things down the line.
Also, what if none of your characters have an "in" with the Academy? Why would the Academy give away this artifact to them?

Fair.

That's a really good point. It would make it more satisfying for the player to get it that way to. Thanks for taking the time to help me out!
Not a problem!
Can't wait for the kickstarter to come out for this setting. Should be interesting to see how quickly they manage to meet their goal.
