The idea is that when Eberron: Rising from the Last War was released, they had a slew of new magic items that had a sentience of their own, like kyrzin's ooze, or Living Armor. I think an artificer would jump at the prospect of perfecting these symbiotic items and making a few of their own.
Fun idea. Perhaps they can get an ability where they can grant sentience to items holding their infusions, and this sentience provides some additional benefit (maybe it prevents the character holding/wearing it from being surprised or something like that).

That's actually a good idea. Like you'd get a bonus to a certain roll (attack, damage, 1 specific skill check) for every sentient infusion you've created and have attuned to.

I think the most balanced way would be, like you said, to give some sort of bonus to ability checks. Something like "when you grant one of your infusions sentience, choose one of the following abilites: ... A creature which is holding or wearing an item bearing your infusion and which is sentient gains a bonus to the chosen ability check equal to your Intelligence modifier. Each infusion which you grant sentience to can only grant a bonus to one type of ability check. If a creature has two infused items which bear the same bonus to the same ability check, the bonuses do not stack." Just my idea on it. Feel free to go with whatever comes to your mind. It would probably be worth also limiting the number of your infusions the sentience can be granted to at once.
I think a bonus to ability checks makes the most sense flavorfully. The item is giving its user some sort of insight into how to perform certain tasks. I think that if it were an attack bonus or damage bonus, it would make your infusions too much greater than the base infusions granted to the artificer

This isn't actually a signature, just something I copy and paste onto the bottom of all my posts. Or is it? Yep, it is. Or is it..? I’m a hobbit, and the master cranial imploder of the "Oops, I Accidently Destroyed Someone's Brain" cult. Extended sig. I'm actually in Limbo, it says I'm in Mechanus because that's where I get my WiFi from. Please don't tell the modrons, they're still angry from the 'Spawning Stone' fiasco. No connection to Dragonslayer8 other than knowing them in real life.
