Are you setting up camp here or continuing through the woods?

(It was not a question for the DM, but for the other players. Hessta wishes to camp here, that way we only have 1 night in the forest. If we kept traveling now we would travel for a couple hours, then need to camp. If we did that, then we would have two nights in the forest.

What Hessta is suggesting is that we instead camp now, outside of the forest. Then we push hard the next day, spend one night in the forest, and finish up with another hard ride to get clear of the forest before the next night.

If someone has a better plan/idea then put it forward.)

OK, you start to set up camp foe night, and a shadow begins to descend upon your site. With the head and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters of a lion, talons outstretched, it's intentions are clear. It's going for the mounts.

Not yet unfortunately.

I thought that monks had darts?

Or dodge action, or ready action, or simply movement. There is a good deal you can do to get ready for when it does come into melee range.

(oh you can get closer?)

(My suggestion, if anyone is wishing ideas, is to move closer to the horses, then ready an action to attack the creature when it gets within melee range. We know it is going for the horses, would expect the DM to be ok with a ready action to be triggered regardless of what horse it goes for.)
