Orvo echoed Kotar’s thoughts and voiced a clear doubt. Who could be using the room? A Netherese survival? With as many expeditions to the ruins folk would know if that was the case. Then maybe another expedition seeking to uncover riches on the ruins? Maybe one that arrived in Eiselcross for another direction, connected with the Empire or the Dynasty. Before the goliath could seek the opination of his companions Durnham shouted, alerting everyone to the presence of a ball of snakes? As battle started the fighter could not help but to be thankful to the wizard’s reaction. If not for him they might had been surprised.
“Nice shot!”He said as the younger dwarf hit his mote of fire on the enemy. “Not nice shot.” He completed as the snakes spewed poison in Qidira. “Flanking!” He told turning his eyes to Brandon and advancing with sword and shield in hand. The warlock was the one more likely to take formation with him, being as much of a melee warrior as a ranged combatant. Toxic enemies could hinder they journey even after defeated. It was best to finish the thing fast and any advantage that could help in doing so was certain to be welcome. With that in mind he readied the strike.
Notes: Kotar moves one square to the left and readies an attack with the longsword, the trigger being someone to flank the enemy with him.
As Qidirasuccumbs to the snakes’ bites and the venom that they imbue, Ressys hurls a bolt of fire into the middle of the swarm and incinerates a few more. The swarm is thinned a little, but still formidable.
@Ressys:
The snakes have a distinctly undead appearance, grey and pallid with rotting flesh. Along with the venomous damage to Qidira you would deduce that they are unlikely to be affected by any poisonous attacks.
Kotarbellows his tactical instruction and moves into a flanking position, raising his sword and preparing to strike.
@Durnham:
Good roll! The power sustaining these creatures seems to be relatively low-level; you deduce that they are unlikely to be immune to any particular damage apart from poison, which they obviously deployed on poor Qidira. However, the size and movement of the swarm means that traditional piercing, slashing and bludgeoning attacks are likely to be less effective than other options. Attempts to scare or charm them may also be problematic.
Brandon looks over at Kotar and nods at the Goliath’s instructions. He knows just what the fighter is doing. He steps forward over the fallen form of Qidira, knowing that eliminating the threat is the surest way to save her, and moves into a position that places the snakes between him and Kotar, forcing them to react from both directions at once. Brandon swings his longsword around in an arc, cutting through the mass of snakes.
Kotarand Brandonunleash their co-ordinated attack, hacking and slicing numerous snakes as they continue to writhe and lash out. It looks like the swarm is about two-thirds of its original strength now.
Qidiralies on the ground unconscious, the blood flow from her multitude of wounds starting to slow (one death save success, zero failures)
Durnham's fire melts away a dozen snakes into a molten pool of sludge; the swarm is down to about half strength now and its combined attacks less dangerous.
The swarm turns on Kotar (target selected at random), tiny mouths lashing out with fangs at the half giant:
Attack on Kotar Attack: 18 Damage: 6 piercing - if the attack hits then Kotar must pass a DC 10 CON save or take 11 poison damage, half on a save.
(I didn't realize when it was my last turn that Qidira was unconscious from the attack. I would have used Healing Word on her. So, recon last or do it this time, either way.
Ressys saw that Qidira fell to the ground and raising his totem he whispered a prayer of healing for 6
On his next turn he produces another flame and hurls it at the snakes. "Undead creatures, as the others were.. This place is an evil tomb"
Seeing Qidira fall, Ressysutters a soft healing chant. As he does so, the venom is driven from Qidira's body and the gnome's eyes flutter open groggily.
(Qidirais now conscious but prone on 6hp)
Throughout the chanting, Ressysproduces and hurls a magical flame at the pack of snakes. Half of the remaining swarm go up in flames, leaving only a few left to fight.
(Kotar's turn - as confirmed OOC, the attack missed and you are conscious)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
He underestimated how fast those snakes were and for a moment genuinely thought he had been hit. He could almost see their fangs digging deep into his flesh, their poison running through his. Fortunately, in the last moment, he managed to put his shield in front of the reptiles, escaping any damage. We need to bring these things down fast, he though as fire roared throughout the room and Brandon’s steel fell into the creature. Creatures.
Before the warlock blade could leave its victim, the fighter raised his longsword and took a deep breath. Concentrating all the strength on his body, drawing upon the totality of his stamina, he made its regeneration grow faster. Then he struck. Fast, without breaking his posture. More technique than power, surprisingly enough for someone of his size. His mind was clear and a smile visible upon his lips. Part of it came from confidence, after all the flanking divided the attention of the enemy and made it considerably easier to hit. But there was more than that. Somehow the danger, the heat of the battle, made him happy. Made him feel truly alive. Battle fever, people used to call it. Something enough to make one believe fighting was truly in the blood of the goliath.
Notes: Kotar spends his Bonus Action to use Second Wind and his action to attack the snake ball.
Durnham signals Archimedes to flap down from the corner onto the ground next to Qidira. The owl butts it’s head against Qidira’s head softly as it makes soft cooing noises.
Qidira indicates wordlessly that she is OK, just needs a moment to catch her breath.
Inside the chest - under the fetid corpses of slain undead snakes - you find quite a treasure haul. Coins of various metals and denominations, seemingly of Aeorian heritage, worth 60gp for each of you. There is also a small bottle of green liquid which you identify as a Potion of Advantage.
Durnham gets the chance to decipher the note that he found in the desk, taking a few minutes to translate the ancient draconic language.
@Durnham:
To whomever finds this:
All my people are dead: my family, my friends, and my workers. I, too, am dead. Were it not for my quick thinking and prowess with necromancy, our important work at Salsvault would be over. I continue to labor in my undead form, trying to find a sickness that can infect the gods themselves. If I have perished, I implore you to find my lab, find my notes, and finish my work. The gods must pay for Aeor’s destruction.
He could feel the cold kiss of steel tearing the flesh of the serpents. Blood and poison covering his blade after an attack Kotar was sure had perfectly applied his strength and the quality of his weapon. We are getting used to fighting together, he thought nodding to Brandon and then letting his eyes wander toward the others. The longer they continued adventuring the deadlier they would become. Maybe someday leaving their names in history. Maybe those friends where the pathway to his objective. And idea he put behind hearing Durnham ask if Qidira was fine. Relief took hold of the goliath’ body as he heard her answer.
“It really was a nasty surprise, but maybe we could use to our advantage?” He said to the wizard while looking at the creature’s dead body. “Some rangers use poison. Think we could get some out of there?”
There was also the possibility of selling it, but he somehow didn’t like the idea. Maybe because blades, different from the poison of what he supposed to be an artificial creature, where not necessarily meant to kill. There was sport, spectacle, a sense of protection in most weapons. The toxin felt to him like something whose very existence was meant to end others. Admittedly contradictory.
